Default CRX upper control arms hitting shock towers

I got a 91 crx with some omni coilovers, I love them, but in the front I can't lower the car too much. It gets to a point where the upper control arms are touching the shock tower/frame (no strut or spring movement possible so it's like ridding with a big steel rod there instead. I've seen plenty of CRX's that were just slammed to the ground and they didn't have any problems, they had plenty of movement. I don't want a slammed car, but I like the fender/wheel clearance to be about 1/2 inch to 1 inch, which I think isn't asking much. Just wondering what you guys do to get more clearance or if it's just a problem only I have.

alot of people cut the shock towers and weld a hump in the contact area

Oh yeah, I remember seeing alot of EG guys with holes in the shock towers for the control arm I guess I could rework it, I'm going to shave the bay anyway.

just keep in mind that it is structural so it wouldnt hurt to reinforce it a bit

It kind of looks like two layers, one is the upper shock tower part and then looks like another layer underneath (gap inbetween the two). If I do cut and reshape I would reinforce the area. I got no pics right now, because it's my daily driver, but maybe later this week.
