Default Clutch noise - what's likely wrong?

On my 2003 Honda Civic LX 5-speed with 96,000 miles on it, I've started hearing a rattle when I push in the clutch and the engine is spinning down. There's also a similar noise when I'm driving between 15 and 35mph with the clutch pedal untouched and the car in gear. The noise may be there at higher speeds where road noise could cover it.

One mechanic heard it was a noise when I push in the clutch and said it was definitely a throw out bearing. He quoted a complete clutch job for $720.

Is this likely it? What would you do?

well actually for the do it yourself guy try looking into other mechanics or if you want to try to do it yourself check out youtube or even buy a repair manual.

Thanks, I'll get a few more quotes. The first included $250 for a clutch kit from O'Reilly's and the rest was labor.

sounds like a spring in your clutch plate is broken or the clutch its self is debonding. also could be a finger on your pressure plate is broken or bent. As far as the price for replacement clutch and labor. for a oem replacement clutch with limited lifetime replacement warrenty and labor included you should be looking at 440-490. where i am at i can get it done for 350 so shop around. over 700 bucks should get you a stage two competition clutch and light weight flywheel installed.

For those prices thats not bad. I just did my own clutch and ha id rather pay the 500 bucks. Sounds like a throw out bearing but the thing that is getting me is the noise while driving. Does it sound like a slight growling type gets progressively louder the faster your driving?

The noise is pretty constant, no change with RPM. If I push in the clutch, it goes away after the engine spins down to idle speed. I can't reproduce the noise when I'm not moving.

After two mechanics quoting over $700 to fix it, I took the car to a local mechanic that came well recommended. He listened to the sound and we drove it a bit, and he said it doesn't seem like a clutch issue. Listening carefully to the engine while I reproduced the noise, he pushed down on the fuse box and the noise went away. Three bolts near the fuse box as well as the metal clamp attached to it had gotten loose and were resonating to cause the noise. Happily, the clutch is fine.
