Ok, I was due for an oil change and I went and grabbed all the supplies this morning. I jacked the car up, drained the oil, replaced the filter, re-tightened the oil pan bolt, poured the new oil in, started it up, let it run for about 30 seconds, and then turned it off. Then, I went and started putting **** away until I noticed a big *** oil puddle from under the car! I then check the dipstick, and it's basically almost dry. I then had to go get more oil(using a diff. car) to see wtf is going on. I come back, put 1 quart in, and it fills it up. I then start it, and as it's running it's "DUMPING" oil from the corner of the oil pan next to the tranny, flywheel, etc. It never did this until now. Rear main seal? Gasket? Ideas?

 

Guessing you didnt put the filter on right.....


Old oil filter probably left the rubber gasket on the engine, which when you put the new filter on with the new rubber gasket they both seated on top of each other. Which causes it to leak from that exact spot.

The old oil filter rubber gasket may have remained on the engine, so there may be two gaskets on the new filter, thereby causing the oil leak.

 

No, there was no rips or nothing in the old oil filter gasket. Before I did the oil change yesterday, I wasn't low on oil or anything. Never had any leaks. I will go double check though. Will keep you guy's updated, Thanks.

 

Holy ****, I just went and looked at the oil filter that I threw away, and I didn't see the rubber seal on it...Maybe it's still on the ****ing block...?

 

nope, it's ABSOLUTELY on the block.

called double-gasketing. very common mistake for rookie oil changers or veterans who get too lazy to check before installing a filter! take solace in the fact that you're not alone lol.

I have a leak as well, however it comes from the rear of the tranny. i think its gear oil and its dripping from the u shape piece from the shift linkage and that u shape piece goes straight to the tranny...I've been told that it is the rear tranny seal. so i bought the seal for like 6 bucks (not bad). Well, my real question is how would i go about changing that rear seal. the tranny is from a 94 teggy. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
