Default Changing a Thermostat

96 Civic EX

First question, can you get away with changing it without draining the coolant, I know some coolant will spill out if you don't.

Do you need to remove the upper hose or can you get away with leaving it on?

And, do you need to use gasket sealer/silicone to put it back together, or can get away without it?

It is just more messy if you don't drain the coolant.

Not removing the upper hose is fine

And, do you need to use gasket sealer/silicone to put it back together, or can get away without it?

Just proper installation of the gasket is adequate

Thanks Ron, I know you should drain, I was going to take the lazy way out.

By the way how much torque on the bolts, or nice hand tight enough?
