If i run on the track???
Could anyone help me??? I have a SS 2001, should i run in auto mode, or should i run SS mode, when i'm on the track. Also if it's in SS mode when should i shift?? I have to deal with it, cuz i did not get a stick.
youre screwwed either way, ss ludes just dont put down good times. but to answer your question, i dont know where the auto shift points are, but i would think you would do better in ss mode.
when i say shift points, i mean when the auto changes gears. ie: from 1st to 2nd and so on. can you shift your car at higher rpms with ss rather than letting the auto shift for you? in other words, if your auto shifts to 2nd at, lets say, 6000rpm and you can shift it at 7000rpm using ss i would go that direction. im sure there are some ss guys here that can help you more than i can.
To road race the car-put it in SS mode and probably 3rd gear for speeds up to 100. That is what I do after leaving the pits at Watkins Glen. You can get into 4th on the back straight there. I also try to keep the revs under 7000 (very conservative <G>
. At Pocono you will shift more frequently because the turns on the infield are tighter-thus I have had to grab 2nd in some places to keep the power up. As to when you should shift-that is going to be determined by the layout of the track and where in the power band you need to be to come out of a turn accelerating to top speed.
Again-at The Glen I go thru the "esses" at around 90 and accelerate up the hill to the straight in 3rd-over 100 I'm in 4th until I reach the bus stop chicane and downshift to 3rd . When you do your braking and shifting will come to you with practice.
Be kind to the tranny and it will reward you with a lot of fun.

Why dont u try both modes at the track to see if there is a difference first? Also to answer your question, i believe the SS mode is better. In auto mode it shifts around 7000 rpm whereas you can use SS mode and shift around 7800-8000 and stay in vtec. Staying in vtec will def get u a faster 1/4mile. Dunno if this works but when u go there, torque break that till around 2000rpm and shift at redline around 7800 so u can stay in vtec, that's ur best way imo. Just dont think ur gonna hit a great 1/4 unless ur FI cuz SS lude are slow without force induction. Well hope that helped, lates

for road corse or auto-x use SS. For the drag strip use auto. All that matters at the drag strip is that U turn in consistant times. Thus if U can run the same time over and over your going to win! Auto shifters at the drag races are better for consistancy, and offter get better times because some are geard such that U shift 1 less time druing a 1/4 mile run than a standerd. Anyway, run in auto mode if your talking about the drag strip.

ok i will tell you when i get the chance to run, but thanks for all of the help and i put everything in consideration. i need to try it out 4 myself. i was just wondering because the car in auto shifts at 7000 rpm, and i could shift the car at 7500rpm in ss mode. Would it make a diff on the 1/4 mile time since i get 500 rpm more.
57STS it depends on what LuderX is looking to do You do NOT always win by getting consitent times at the drag strip. It depends on what kind of racing you are competing in. Bracket racing yes you want to be very consitent, but for heads up.. yes it is nice to be consitent, but who cares all that matters is who crosses the finish line first.
It seems as if this will be LuderX's first time to the track so I don't think he will be so concerned about competing probably more to just see what kind of times he can run. I do not own a ss but from what I understand he will yeild better results from running in ss mode.

Hehe this is me at the track. Avoid water. Stage. Power brake. 3rd Yellow light. Let go of brake. I usually use the sportshift mode. I've tried leaving it in drive. Got better times in SS mode. My best time off spray was a 15.8 worst has been a 16.8. Mainly low 16 avg.

over at po.com this debate has been on for awhile. the most heard and logical answer would be to race autox or drag with the ss mode. cause you can bring it all the way to 8k. its suitable for autox cause if you get ur car slow enuf, you can take slow corners with 1st gear. but i would recommend that.. the tranny is real weak. mine just died 10/8 = ( so sad.. i think cause i did down shift to 1st.. but not in ss.. i just stomped on the gas.
ss 1/4 usually run 16.1 - 15.9 depending track condition and driver. launch is key too.. cause of the auto lag.
