1998 Accord Codes
I have a 1998 Honda Accord EX, 4 cyl, automatic.
My car sounds and drives fine but the check engine light kept coming on so I had autozone run the codes. It came back as a 42. When we looked it up on their computer it said "Catalyst System Below Threshold, Bank 1". The guy said he didn't think it was my catalytic converter but rather the sensor. The part was $89 but they said they don't have it in stock nor can they order it. I went to car quest and they said they could order it but it would be $176.00. The print out the man gave me says "Sensor located before catalytic converter. Oxygen sensor. Bosch #13075 $89.99". My question to you is, where can I find this part? I don't want to have to pay $176.00 for it if it's apparentliy available for $89.99 somewhere else although they can't order it. Also, I'm not sure what kind of reader they used but every place I look on the internet does not show a 42. I can find a 41 and 43, but not 42. Does this sound like it's just an oxygen sensor or does it sound like a catalytic converter needs to be replaced? Thank you.

I had my friend check mine out with is machine, and he said that my cat was gone, I found it hard to believ since the car is still somewhat a few years old, My sensor came on and off,
You can try the dealer, I would have the Honda tech give you a free estimate, I know In california you have the right to request a free estimate, GO to your local dealer and ask for a estimate, They will know the definite answer, I would hate guessing and buying something you didn't need,
I also know that the exhaust system is covered under a 7-8 year warranty through Honda, so if it is your cat and you have less than I think 80K they will replace it for free, check your owners manual for details on all your warranty info,
Goodluck, and let us know what it was,

OK I just checked my Helms manual, there is NO code 42, 41 or 43 but not 42. There might be a code 42 for the V6, my manual doesn't cover the V6, but that would make more sense, since they told you it says bank 1. 4cyl only has one cyl bank, but a V6 would have 2. so maybe the guy at autostoned had the wrong motor in the the computer when he ran the code.
You can check the code yourself, check out this link here.
At any rate, if it's an O2 sensor, you can get the part at http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com or you can try ebay, because I see them show up there from time to time. just make sure you get the right part number. but those will be the cheapest ways to get them. changing an O2 sensor is super easy, and autozone probably loans the special socket you need for the sensor. even if not, they only cost like $10 to buy.

My car has 113,000 miles on it so it's not under warranty anymore. From what I read the sensor is supposed to be changed every 100,000 miles so we went ahead and changed it. The light did not go out. Do you need to reset the codes for the check engine light to go out or will it go out automatically if/when the problem is corrected? The code was indeed po420 so maybe it is my catalytic converter.

Sounds like the O2 sensor. I work for O'Reilly Auto Parts and if I can get the one you need then I will give you a price and everything and if there isn't a store around you we can talk about me buying it and then sending it to you. Unless you want to wait until I do an OBD1 Swap on my 99 Cord then I sell you mine of my Coupe. Anyways I will do some research on it for you and try my best to get my hands on one for you. Oh and Btw your Bosch Part# 13075 (same brand we carry) Is the one for the Manifold not for the one on the cat also known as the downstream O2 sensor. I also need to know if you car is 2 door or 4. I have the other to Bosch #'s 13071 for the Sedan Models and 13072 for the Coupe. Hope this helps in anyway.

hey guys, i have an OEM catalytic converter, came off a 2000 accord coupe. mines is in VERY good condition, and i have pics!!! first come first server, any1 need a cat, i will throw in the o2 sensor as well. too bad TXgirl, u already bought the o2 sensor, i have an o2 sensor and OEM catalytic converter that had like 25,000 miles on it, i am selling it for only $100+shipping(around $10), so 110 shipped. the OEM catalytic converter runs a little less than $1000 brand new retail, and BTW< honda would NOT REPLACE a catalytic converter a lot of times under warranty 8yr/80,000 miles if u have aftermarket products on ur car like catback exhuast CAI's cuz they say it contributed to the problem(thats what they told friends of mines), depends how GAY ur honda dealership is, so many times u have to change it back to ur OEM parts temporrily. so if any1 wants to jump at the deal, write me, i got pics...
My car is 4 door. The Bosch #13075 was the one I was told by the guy at autozone that I needed so that is the one I bought. I finally found one at O'Reilly's. But you think this is not the one I needed after all?
Thanks.
Thanks.
If it were me I would sell you the Bosch # 13071. IMO I would say you have the wrong O2 Sensor. I still haven't gotten an email back from my corporate office yet so I don't know the price but I should know by tomorrow. I will keep you informed on it.
