Default Ignition timing question - test at idle or at higher rpm?

Im adjusting the ignition timing on my 96 d16a ZC and at idle when i line the red hash mark (TDC) on my crank pulley it idles beautifully, but as soon as i give it alittle throttle the timing goes retarded and i can hear detonation, now i just set it to prob 8* advanced and when I give it some throttle the red hash mark appears nice and center with the marker and it revs nicely and the idles not bad either...is this ok? or is my mechanical timing off?

*mods are headers, 2.25'' exhaust, and intake

Warm engine up, jump service connector, and set timing with engine idling to spec.
