Default ATF fill line

I read somewhere that honda auto trannies shift jerky when they are overfilled. i just checked my tranny dipstick and the line is above the 2nd fill line. so its overfilled. should i just drain a little and see if my transmission shifts smoother or what? also, how much should i drain?

EDIT: please reply ASAP b/c i have the car on a lift ready to go
thanks

First drain out before you drive anymore. Over filling the trannie or engine is bad bad. Also, when you changed the fluid did you do the filter too? A dirty filter will cause a car to shift poorly and even slip. If you didn't change the filter, drain it, replace the filter, put the pan back up and fill slowly.

If it holds 4qts for instance, pour in 2.5-3 qts, then start the engine up. Make sure you are on a flat surface. Bring the shifter through each gear slowly, then as the engine warms up, check the fluid. It is important to check it when it is warm. Add a little, then check until it's right. I'd rather have it a bit on the low side than over for sure. If it's too much under you may feel it slip while driving, then you know it needs a touch more of fluid. But I wouldn't use this as a way to measure, just a back up.

Don't drive anymore with it over-filled. If you need to change the filter do it. When you see how dirty that filter is, you'll be glad you did it. Good Luck.

Where is the tranny filter located? And what will overfilling cause the tranny to do? I just changed my tranny fluid and when I hit about 45-55MPH my D4 light starts flashing a tranny code. I pulled the code and it said bring it to the dealership. I'm just wonderin if I may have overfilled it and caused this problem.

I'm sorry for the slow reply. It will only let me have five posts per day right now. I don't know why.

Too much fluid will blow out seals here and there. Same thing will over filling the oil.

I assumed the car had a filter, since most do. Did you drop the pan when you did it, or just drain it? Do you have a chiltons for it? Or you could always do a search here I'm sure.

I guess first things first. If you think that you pulled a code because you over filled it, check it warm (maybe five-ten minutes warm) and see where it is on the dipstick. If it is incorrect, then drain and see if the code comes up again. Is there any other symptoms or is the light just coming on?

Good luck.

actually i referred to a helms manual(i work at honda). anyways, it says to warm up your car by driving around for a while, drain the fluid from the bolt on the bottom and put about 3 quarts back in. i actually checked it again and its at the 2nd line on the dipstick, which is correct. i think the problem i had was that i kept checking it when the car was cold. to me. oh well, thanks for the responses.
