hey guys , so i dropped in a d16z6 in my eg last week. i am using the same harness from my d15b8. the dizzy from the z6 was not working and i couldnt get the one from the b8 to fit so what i did was switch the internals . so i ran my car for a week with the p05 and it was running great. until yesterday, i was driving my car all day with no problems. until i started it and i heard ping noises and felt my car miss firing. so i pulled out my plugs and noticed that the plug gap from cylinder#1 was shut. so i re gapped it and keep having same issue. i assumed my piston was hitting the spark plug. but wat i did was re insert the plug after i gapped it than cranked my car for 10 sec with the dizzy disconnected. i pulled out the spark plug and it was fine. so i connected everything back up and when i started my car i ran into the same problem. can it be my dizzy? my timing marks seemed to be in place. i really dont know wats going on . i would really appreciate any help or advice.

 

I doubt that the piston hit the plug....you would more than likely notice more damage if that happened... But one thing you could do would be compression check all the cylinders... and old head would just hook up a vacuum gauge and start the engine....if it holds steady vacuum then it is a electrical problem if it bounces all over the place it would be a mechanical problem. I probably would try to find out which cylinder is misfiring by doing a balance test. start the engine and disconnect and reconnect each plug wires one by one...if there is no difference with the plug wire unplugged then you found which cylinder is misfiring. I would also try to find a known good distributor to swap out....

 

the miss firing was coming from cylinder 1 cuz my gap would close. nothing happens to the spark plug when i crank the engine with the dizzy disconnected.but when i connect everything back up my car will have a clean start until i hear the pings/ knock . then i take the plug out and the gap is shut as if the piston would be hitting the plug but i know its not. im just out of ideas of what to do.

 

Try swapping the plug into a different cylnder.

Honestly if the piston was smacking the plug, you would likely have bent valves, or a smashed spark plug.

Or try just replacing the plug.

I have no clue what could cuase that, but I doubt the piston is hiting it.

 

What plugs are you running?

 

so which is it ping or knock? If it is knocking why are you waisting your time...go buy another long block...it would be cheaper to replace with a used longblock then to fix it. if it is a ping then continue on with diagnosis.

its only happening in cylinder1 it happened out of the blue.

 

its definetly not smacking the plug unless you have some crazy domed pistons. the cylinder heads are "hemi" heads like the dodge hemi engines, and the piston would hit the outside of the combustion chamber do to it being lower first.

 

found my problem guys n girls. i took the head off and found a metal/ copper thingy smooshed up. thank god there was no damage what so ever to my piston the walls or valves. after i threw everything back on with of course new head gasket,plugs,wires, oil and filter it was running smoothe. but now i have a sputtering problem at low rpms . i drove it home with no problems than i drove it to my friends house with no problem. after an hour or so i decided to leave. and as i was leaving my car started sputtering . i would gas it and it would go than it would sputter at a certain point, but than i would step on the gas and it would stop sputtering. what can be causing this ?

I agree, check the timing. You may have got something a little off pulling the head.

These cars are really easy to get a tooth off.

Check mechanical first, then set ignition timing. You'll need a timing light to do the ignition.

 

sounds good . ill check it first thing in the morning. the timing was fine when we threw everything back on . but like you said theyre easy to jump a tooth.

 

Extremely easy. I did when I did my timing belt. Thankfully, I checked it like 11 times, and I caught it. lol

My spark plug definitely got it 3rd cylinder what would make it do that could it do that from not timing it right????

hi i got a honda ballade 180i my piston burnt or hit a hole right under my spark plug just after i done the head gasket and skeemed the head

 

how could the piston have burnt or hit but the spark plug was not damaged but only wet of oil. i would like to know it if i could buy new piston would this problem accur again?

 

Can't hit a hole...it'll fly right through it.
