EK Civic Wont Start - fuel pump doesn't prime
Hey Guys I need Help My ek wont so heres some info. I was gone for ten days came home started my civic it started ran for 5 minutes then died. I tried to restart it nothing it would just crank over but nothing else so today I changed out my fuel pump, the fuel pump relay and checked for any blown fuses under the drivers side and still nothing but when I turn the ignition I dont hear the fuel pump at all. So the fuel pump isnt getting power so Im stuck and dont know where else to go any info will be appreciated thanks.
how does the thermostat affect this? it might sound like a dumb question but how would i do that? also i tried hooking up check light reader and it keeps getting the "unable to communicate with vehicle code" beacuse i have a check engine light as well
The ground on the thermostat housing is the ground for the main relay. If the ground is corroded, the main relay will prevent the car from turning over.
You probably can't communicate with the engine because you can only read codes when the key is in the on position.

what about getting one of those toggle switch setups for your fuel pump, you can get them in a bunch of ricey colours, or just like black if you'd rather the subtle look, but really that would by pass your problem right?
He has no clue if it is just the fuel pump or the sparks too. If it were a main relay, that won't help anything at all.
Try pulling a spark plug, hook it up to the spark plug wire outside of the engine and ground it by putting the spark plug threads on a good ground on the body somewhere, have someone turn the key to crank it over while you hold the spark plug on a ground. Make sure to hold the plug by the wire!
This will let you see if you are getting spark. That is the first place to start. And definitely check the thermostat ground as mentioned above, it wouldnt hurt to take some sandpaper and sand the connector and where it mounts on the thermostat housing.
Also, when is the last time you changed the distributor rotor?
Start with the small things, over half the time its usually a ground wire or something small.
Let me know if this helps!!!

thats true, well easy way (no gas spilling from disconnection of fuel filter) i find to check if your fuel pump is working if you cant hear is get someone to slightly pinch the rubber hose leading to the fuel rail when you turn the key ahead the should feel the line pressurize. and like sol power said spark test lets you know if its actually firing, when i had a problem with only running on 3 cyl we checked spark got a new distributor (old one was in rough shape inside as well as cap and rotor button) then we checked injectors, i dont know if this was the right way to do it but we just switched injectors from the cyl that wasnt firing to one that was, we changed plugs wires too, and replaced grounds, in the end we just checked the plug-ins for my comp and made one that wasnt fully clipped put back in and it was mint again, not saying comp is your problem just that was all those things i was told to check
the ground to your thermostat grounds your fuel pump. My del sol wasn't getting fuel or spark with that not hooked up properly. Worse case it could be a bad main relay. Youd have to resolder all the connections on it or buy a new one.
I did a spark plug test and I'm not getting a spark so will it be the ignition coil that's gone bad or will the distributor have to replaced??
Those years are known for having ignition switch problems. Also, the distributor has an igniter that also commonly goes bad on the civics. There is an article here on how to test the ignition system...

Start by considering one problem that could prevent both spark and fuel, for example the ECU/main relay fuses.
The CEL generally would not light up if the ignition switch were the problem.

I think I have enough research done to determine the problem with the civic thanks for the help guys much appreciate I will update the status as I perform all these test in order to come to a conclusion.
okay so i checked the main relay and im not getting power to the nr.7 terminal which is for the fuel pump. so i jumped it and it did kick on but as soon as i remove the wire it stops. i check the ground going to the thermostat housing and i cleaned up the ground. nut im still not able to start the car. could it be the bad ecu or the distributor? or should i just replace all the main grounds??
I checked the fuses at stated and they are all in good working order. Well my room mate told me that while I was gone it rained bad and our street has a bad tendency to flood out so might the weather had something to do with the car unable to start.
