Default gas gauge accuracy

So I have an automatic coupe a 99 and the gas gauge if tank is full doesn't move much at about 120miles the gauge will be 3/4 right now I've driven 283 and the gauge shows 1/4 tank left.

I bought a 97 cx with a manual transmission, which should equal even better MPG and seems like the gas gauge drops extremely fast or is a bit off. For example its showing 3/4 of a tank and I've only driven about 40 miles. I filled it up and am getting around 29-30mpg so not that bad not great but not bad.

My thinkings is both cars should perform the same same engine pretty much, same tank size. So what wrong with the hatch? or what can i check to make sure the gas gauge is accurate?

You can check to see the gas gauge is accurate by filling it and recording how much gas you need to put in at each marker (if that makes any sense.) Keep in mind that parking on hills can screw with the gas gauge.

no gas gauge is accurate. it only gives you an idea of how much fuel you put in.

i guess that makes sense blasting down fwy on-ramps make it go down too.

MY coupe seem pretty accurate though filled it up just now and put in 9.1 gallons and had 1/4 tank. So the tank holds 11.somthing gallons so 1/4 is pretty accurate.

Problem is the hatch can be on empty according to the gauge but you can only put in like 6-7 gallons so its not even close to empty really. Also the gauge starts falling after about 30miles so and sometimes goes back up to full or from 3/4 to full

Do you live in a hilly area?

Just reset your odometer when you get gas. Next time divide that number by how many gallons you put in to calculate your mileage. if you're satisfied with your mileage just base your gas purchases on the amount of miles you've driven, these gas gauges move a lot more than most cars while turning, on hills, etc.
