Default 97 CX hatch/GSR swap - cut wire harness issues

Need some help from you guys...

Looking at a 97 CX hb with a 98 gsr engine and trans swap.

However owner says it was a hack wiring job causing some shorts bad running issues.

If I can get a good price on this vehicle, what is the best route to get it up and running?

All new wiring harness or just try to clean it up somehow. Owner says he used the civic cx harness and cutoff connectors he needed from the GSR engine harness.

What problems may I encounter or what should I look for when I check out the vehicle?

Any estimates on cost to get this in proper shape?
-gsr harness $ ?
- new ecu $?
- cx harness $?

Thanks would appreciate some help!

hmm that sounds easy enough... so the stock 97 cx ECU should be okay and allow this motor to run properly?

h no thats a single cam ecu you need the ecu for the motor or get the conversion harness and go obd1 with chipped ecu

Buy a 96-98 EX harness, you can't use the GSR.

I belive the GSR is OBD2a, so you should be able to run that ecu. Not 100% you'll to look and figure it out forsure.

Sounds like he had the GSR ecu in there but this thing also has a damaged vtec solenoid, a lot of problems but I want a toy to tinker with.......

When you buy a car like this one, you must trust that the seller's diagnosis of the problem is correct. That's extremely risky.

You can use the CX harness but if its as bad as it sounds then you should get a 96-98 Civic EX harness. Then use a 96-98 P72 ECU and wire up the IABs on the intake manifold to the ECU.

i can't see the harness going for more then $100. I see them all the time for $50-60

For the ecu, who knows. I've seen them for $40, and over $200.

Are you planing to do any modifications to the engine?

Thanks I think he has the p72 in it from the gsr he took drivetrain from not for sure though yet... so I will most likely need a new harness, brake work, and vtec solenoid to get this running. I would get the ex harness just because it is Vtec wired correct?

Awesome that's not too bad of an investment to get a car running, you'll have to to keep an eye out for me for a nice looking harness! I was looking at oem gsr harnesses earlier and they seemed pricey but no need for that now~

Yes eventually not sure what he has done so far but i'd just make it breathe better first then think about cams and porting, itb's would be fun someday

The EX harness will be the easy way, it already has most things, beisdes the IAB's, and maybe something else.

something like this? I assume it has to be a MT harness as well?

Can anybody link me to or show me pictures of wiring up the IABs?

Hopefully the guy just didn't know how to wire his swap and I can pick up a nice project that will be fixed in no time! Any tips on what to look for as far as problem wise on the car since it has been sitting for a year and a half - think I should rent a compression tester ?
