Icon2 I need valve help too much ticking. too much ticking it driving me crazy!!!!!!

So I have a question that would greatly be appreciated if someone could help me. I have a 99 bone stock dc4 with 144000 miles on it. I am getting a great amount of valve chatter from the engine. Have been told that hondas Have some amount of ticking from the valves but i am pretty sure that the amount I have is not healthy. I was wondering if anyone could help me with a how to on adjusting the valve spacing to elemenate some of this noise. I have done it before but it was on ohv engines and Rb engines. I know hondas are diff. I was told there will need to be a special tool involved other then a filler gauge. Shedding any light on my situation would help a ton. just looking to adjust my valves.

Pull your spark plugs and your valve cover make sure the gasket on the vlave cover dont rip or stretch then get a socket that fits your crank pully nut spin it clock wise till your arrows point up together on your cam gears thats TDC! starting with the piston closes to the crank pully at TDC you gona need a blade mesurer you need a 7 and 8 size blade 8 for exshuast lobe and 7 for intake lobe. check and adjust in this cylinder order 1.3.4.2 and you have to turn the crank pully 90 degres counter clock wise for every cylinder except number 1 so after turning clockwise for number 1 you go counter clockwise 90 deg for the remaining cylinders and remember to torqe down the valve cover bolts to 12 lbs if you need any more advice dont be shy and good luck dude!! and no all you need is the gauge a flat head screw driver and i think a number 10 or 12 open end wrench for tighting the valve bolts!!

let engine cool down, engine needs to be under 100 degrees
take off valve cover
take off spark plug to make your life easier
find tdc
adjust rockers for #1 cylinder, oem spec is .006 intake/ .007 exhaust for b16/gsr head
turn crank counter clock wise till cam gear makes 1/4 turn
adjust rockers for #3 cylinder
turn crank counter clock wise till cam gear makes 1/4 turn
adjust rockers for #4 cylinder
turn crank counter clock wise till cam gear makes 1/4 turn
adjust rockers for #2 cylinder
you are done, put everything back on.

Basically what you do is set the engine to a position where the cam is completely off the rockers on one cylinder. Next, loosen the locknuts on the rockers. Run feeler gauges under the cam and adjust the adjusting screw until the clearance is correct. Then hold the screw with a screwdriver while you hand tighten the locknuts. Repeat for each cylinder. It's not too hard if you have the right tools, and you can find good how-tos if you Google search.

The special tool is designed to hold the clearance adjusting screw in position while you tighten the locknut. You can't do this very easily with a standard socket set or set of wrenches. You can bend a wrench into a shape that will fit in the head and tighten the locknut while you hold the adjuster screw stable with a screwdriver. I had this done at a tool shop for like $10 for a used wrench and the heat bending. If you don't do this it's a serious PITA to get the lash settings correct.

Holy $h!+ everybody replied...

Yes it'll solve your problem if you do it right. Less noise from the tappets and probably a silkier engine feel especially at low engine speeds.

now one more problem though my buddy has a b20b w/gsr tranny and we adjusted his valves too and now he is noticing that his gas mileage is worst and the rpms to mph ratio is higher then usual. we did the same adjustment to his as we did to mine because we thought the gaps would be the same do to the head being the same.

If the valves were adjusted correctly, gas mileage shouldnt get any worse and it definately wont affect the rpm to mph ratio. Thats gearing...

We are thinking that maybe we slipped up and did not adjust the valve right or that they may be to tight. As far as the gearing I am sure his tranny is good and it does not make any sense for miss gaped valve to affect that this i agree. We will just have to check the gaps again and see what went wrong. i was just wondering if anyone else has came across this prob. Or that maybe we were wrong for thinking that the gaps for an ls would be the same as b20.

The LS and B20 should be the same. 94+ B18's used the same head and cams as the B20's exc. GSR's (obviously). Having valves adjusted too tight is a no no and is far worse than leaving them loose. You are running the risk of burning a valve especially if you run the car hard at all. I would double check all the specs. As for the RPM/MPH thing that is not effected by the valves, you have another issue somewhere else.
