1999 Honda Civic - Need to turn ignition over twice before car starts/runs..
Hello fellow Honda-tech team members,
I have a strange problem that I am REALLY hoping you guys can help me out!!! So when I turn the key in the ignition, it just keeps cranking, but won't 'turn over' or start. Then I try one more time and then in starts up immediately! It has been doing this for a couple of weeks now. I always have to turn the keys in the ignition TWICE before it starts!!
Does anyone know what's wrong with it or what's going on?!?! Your knowledge is greatly appreciated! =D
Thanks so much!
Sam

Cranking but wont turn over or start? What do you consider cranking? Does the fuel pump prime the first time around?
when i turn the key for the first time, it will do everything except but start.. so you can hear it trying to turn on, etc..
How can I tell if the fuel pump is priming the first time around?
THANKS!

Thats what i was wondering if you could hear the fuel pump prime. Turn the radio and ac off so you have no noise, put the key in and turn forward to the acc position just prior to trying to turn the car over and you should hear kind of a brief humming noise from under the backseat for a few seconds. That sound is the fuel pump kicking in and priming the lines.
so if doesnt prime does that mean i need a new fuel pump?? how come it always 'primes' or starts when i turn the key the second time?!
No, it may be the fuel pump relay acting up. I'm not an expert on the fuel system electrical side. From what I just looked up online there is a relay I believe on the passenger side of the car by either the ecm or the fuse box next to the battery. If your able to find the relay maybe check with a local autoparts store to see if they have it. The price is about $30-40 so maybe look around online some more to see if you can test the relay you have before spending the cash. Anyone else please chime in! Hope this helps
So to be honest I can't quite tell if my fuel pump is being primed the first time around, but I only need to 'turn the key in my ignition twice to start it' once. Like if I drive it for the first time that day, the first time I start the car i need to turn the ignition over twice. After that it starts up just fine for the rest of the day (car turns over/starts just turning the key in the ignition once).
Then the next day i need to turn the key in the ignition TWICE the first time i start the car that day. (hopefully all this makes sense)!
Do you have any idea what might be going on??
Thanks again!!!

i would leave it be, its a nice security deterrent lol.
you should hear the fuel pump kick in once the key is in the II position, brake, abs, check engine and battery light should come on too. the check engine light should come on then go away after approx 2 sec.

before you try cranking it in the morning try cycling the from off to ignition on DONT CRANK. you should definitely hear the fuel pump buzzing in a 99 i have a 00. IF it only does it in the morning or if it sits a while its more than likely the fuel filter. My si does this whenever im low on gas or if i let the car sit a week or so. try that if your not hearing buzzing then its more than likely the relay
Hi Guys, you guys have been so helpful in trying to help me figure out the problem to my car. So the fuel pump is definitely priming every single time I start the car up. However, I am still running into the problem where the first time I crank it, it won't start, but the second time it will. And then if you shut if off, it will always start up every single time until the next. (does this make sense at all???)
Also, a new 'problem' just started occuring. The car's 'electricity' just like went off on me while I was cruising! So I had to 'start' the car while I was just coasting like at 40 mph and it started up right away and i just kept on driving!!
So it appears I have some kind of electrical or relay issue maybe?? I am definitely a NOOB so i have NO IDEA of what to check and where to check, etc..
Any input/advice is greatly appreciated!! (Seriously it is you have no idea!) =]
Thanks again!

clean/repair all of your electrical ground thoroughly, consult the helms manual for the ground point locations. when cleaning the grounds, do not scrape any body paint off. Scrub eyelits, bolts, nuts, etc. till they're shiny. Don't forget to clean the bolt holes as well. After all that is done, get a multimeter and measure the resistance of the wires from ground point to battery negative terminal. If over .5ohms, then you need to clean more and or replace some wires.. Don't forget, the ground connections for the battery itself should be cleaned as well!
When you turn the key to position 2, do you hear a slight click near the glove box?

Does the battery light come on?

If you have the same exact issue, what have you tried to do to fix up it until this point? What have you checked?
If you jiggle the key while driving, does the care shut off? My guess is iginition switch or coil right now. Let us know what happens.
