I'm not starting this thread to start a bickering match, I have a few other IR tools and love them but after this incident, I most likely will never support IR again. This is just a warning for people looking into this compressor or maybe something similar.
I bought a 60 gallon IR compressor 3 years ago, since then I've replaced the switch because it would stick ( normal wear item, not a huge deal ) . And Sunday night I flicked on the compressor and the motor literally went up in flames. Probably would of burn the shop down if I wasn't there to stop it.
After doing some research, its a common problem with the motor and it seems like IR knows about it yet won't do anything. A new motor from IR is $417 ish dollars, and I called granger and they wanted $918 dollars. I paid $919 for everything, so I'm still looking around on my options.
Here is another link with the same issue

sorry to hear it. oddly enough the husky and campell 60s are popular around here. they cost less and have been proven to be reliable. my dad bought a 500-600 60 gal campell back in the late 90s that's had nothing but oil changes to this date.
I would dump that garbage motor they use and pickup a Baldor TEFC to replace it with - and never worry about it again.
We replaced the motor on our huge IR 30HP 3000T compressor about 8 years ago with a baldor motor and have never had a single day down since. The original motor went up in smoke.

Bob if you cross reference your hp, phase & frame type on baldor's website. Get a motor # then plug that into google or ebay see what you can find.
If you are lucky - you will be able to find a new/old stock for a fraction of new. You just want to make sure that the mounting & physical dimensions will work. The different series they have are related to duty cycle, but we run almost exclusively super-e tefc motors.

I found everything on the motor besides the enclosure type, any ideas of what it would be or where I could find it ?
This is what I have it narrowed down to, when I left the enclosure to all.

Bob take a picture of the motor and measure the center to center of the mounts and the shaft diameter. Then give baldor a call and give them those measurements and any pictures you took. They should be able to get you close enough to match it up.

Don't bother with those single stage compressors. They try to get max cfm out of them and the motor overloads. Get a 2 stage compressor. I've had my 60 gallon IR for 10 years now with no problems. It's rated at 15 cfm at 175 psi. All I do is change the oil and air filter when needed and it's been very good to me. I use it for mostly body and paint so there's a lot of hours on it and it's still going strong.

Well my neighbor had an account with someone that sold baldor so I was able to get a new motor for around the same price IR wanted, which was $430. When I looked at baldor's site all the prices were around a grand so I'm pretty happy.
I have two 80 gallon IR 2 stagers (15.5cfm at 90-175psi). One is in my shop and runs 12hrs/day 6 days/wk and one at my house for random use. I can't say a bad thing about them and haven't had the first problem. Maintenance goes a long way I think on these, but that's about it.

7.5hp motor.
I could have written the original post myself..same deal. Local rep didn't really seem to care. talked to the territory manager, he seemed to care, and said he would call me back. didn't hear back, so i called him again. said he would call back. never heard back. I just bought a AO Smith myself. I'll never buy another IR product again, mostly due to the fact that their reps don't seem to care. In western canada at least.
btw mine is the IR2340 5hp 2stage with the Emerson motor
