how do i know if my air conditioner compressor is working.
i turned on the a/c and the compressor top plate (thing spinning when the a/c is on) wasn't moving..does it just need freon to get it moving, or is it just broken?

the compressor won't "kick" on if there's no freon or r134 in the system.. you can unplug a switch and jump it with a wire and it will kick on ... that way you can tell if it's the compressor ... i beleive it's called a low-pressure safety switch. jump that and your compressor should kick on without r134. good luck it's hot.

sorry to "steal" your thread but I have a similar problem. One day I was driving and AC was working fine then I literally heard all the freon/r134 leak out. The ac doesnt work anymore and the clutch/wheel on the compressor doesnt spin. Today I took it to a mechanic and he tested the switch that hooks up to the compressor and he said it works (the compressor), so I went to buy one can of r134 from pep boys and tried to put it in my system, the can was punctured and the r134 would not go in, i had the ac on high and everything but the compressor wheel thing would not suck it in which leads me to believe that my compressor is not working. Anybody with knowledge, please help. oh and I know it didn't suck in the r134 bc when I untwisted the can, all the r134 sprayed out.... what a waste of 13.99.

I am having the same problem with my 98 Civic DX. We replaced the compressor, AND re-did the wiring (because we had to splice it to the old connector). The freon is definately empty because when we took the old compressor off nothing came out when we tried to drain it, and when we took it off- and obviously the new compressor doesn't have any freon in it.
So where we're stuck, is that the compressor doesn't kick on. We've checked all the fuses, and like I said, the wiring is fine.
How do we fill the freon, if the compressor won't turn on to pull the stuff out?
The one guy who posted said to find a switch and jump it? What wire? What switch? Jump it with what? I'm not an electrician, I'm not a mechanic... I just know lots of Honda enthusiasts who ALL think they know exactly what's wrong with it- but NONE of them can actually figure it out.
PLEASE HELP! Please help - it's gonna be HOT tomorrow.... I'm going to melt!

Make sure you find the leak before you go and fill it with freon. If you dont find and fix the leak, then you are just wasting time and money. I imagine if it is leaking badly, then the freon you are putting in it is just coming right back out.
