Ticking and Smoking
Hey everyone,
I have a LS/vtec, b18b1 stock bottom end and a 93 gsr head that was rebuilt a year ago. I bought it from the guy like this and at start up it smokes a little and it seems to be constant smoke at idle and at WOT you would think its a turbo diesel or something. i hear a loud ticking too. (in need of valve adj) im just curious if a valve adjustment could be the cause to the smoking or is it time to get new piston rings..?
Thanks for the help

haha well ill get the valves adjusted soonish for the hell of it then when i still see smoke ill have to wait a little to be able to tear it down and get it donw. Funds of a college kid seem to always be ridin on E
Seems to be the same after college too, LOL
Valves outta spec shouldn't cause you to smoke...
A straight B20 swap is fairly inexpensive and makes a great "street" engine.
You can probably find a decent used longblock for ~$300-400 depending on your area.

I would put money on valve seals since its smoking all the time. If the rings were shot you would more that likely have a dead hole from the sounds of how bad the smoke is.
