rear main seal on b18c5 block question..
i just wanted to know what could cause a rear main seal to go out.. someone told me that my clutch could have caused it, is that possible. it dsounds kinda BS to me.. thanks
Not possible unless the the thrust bearings were left out of the engine. That would allow the crank to move so much that could possibly wear out the seal. But to do that, the oil pump or something else would have broken first. Probably diagnosed by a V-8 shop.
Well I know that the dust from your clutch and flywheel is abrasive and can work its way onto the end of the crank where it sticks to the little amount of oil on the lip of the seal.
This dust will eventually where a groove in the end of your crank and wear down the seal a little, allowing more dust and oil to work its way in there, which will in turn wear the down the seal somemore until it basically fails.
Pure deductive reasoning on my part though.
