Icon6 D16y7- Where to go from here?

Okay, Im new to this site, looks awesome so far. I have a d16y7 that i want to keep a low budget with but also i'd like to get more power out of it. I'm considering a head swap because i hear y7 head isn't so great. My motor has ( and this is as close an estimate as i can give) about 120,000 miles on it, power steering and currently not AC compressor, with a semi-terrible exhaust setup (not stock though) and a cold air intake. My question is what can/do i have to do to get this engine/block up to maybe 160-190 hp and/or is this even possible?

Thanks in advance for your help, ill answer any questions for me asap!

ok, well i realize now that ill have to put a lot of money into my single cam to get it where id like it to be, that being said, what should i look at as far a swaps go, i know i can fit a b20 in it without major work to the car, but i want something that sounds great, goes fast, and maybe has vtec hahaha but no turbo yet..

thanks for the quick responses!!!!
im really liking this site so far!

I will attack your problem from two area's. First.. lets address the d16y7 vs other sohc... a few hp at best. The y7 is really a y7 minus the decent intake manifold.

If you keep it under 1k, i would do a d16y8 head with a crower stage 3 cam, valves, keepers/retainers, 3 angle valve job * matching the valves *,

last but not least do flat faced valves, and a 2 layer head gasket, after that and you earn up some more money i would invest in a short gear tranny/lsd.

A sohc all motor is sooo much fun to drive, nothing beats flooring it into a corner. Have fun man!

or you can look into the jdm sohc ? for about 400$-500$ ?? Fresh motor and alot faster then what u have? ull have fun with it while u save up for a decent swap.

Just get a LS swap with a b16 trans and i guarantee that you will be way happier then a single cammer.

You can defiantly build single cams the produce some good power for cheap but it takes quite a bit of knowledge to have it all come together right. Hitting 160bhp can be done for cheap using mostly OEM parts and a bit of elbow grease. The most important thing you need to remember is that a tune will be required, not a base map, a tune. I would guess that I’m right around 160bph ATM, after the tune 180bhp is totally possible. My dyno time was bumped till mid next week but I have a solid street tune down. I would say my engine is worth about $800-$1000 and is fully re-built. Keep in mind sticking with a D-series you don’t need new axels, shift linkage, mounts, engine, trans, just work with what you have.
