timing belt not tensioned right?
ok well, a few months ago my timing belt broke taking all 16 of the valves, on my H23.
I put in new valves, seals, headgasket, etc. And recently got it running. Everything seemed fine until I was coming up an onramp at ~75 mph, 3800 Rpm. All of a sudden my revs dropped and they wouldn't go up. Car stayed on, I pulled over, and eventually got it towed back to my house. It ran normally after that, hit 4k in every gear as a test and nothing happened.
Well today I was driving it home, and I heel toed into a turn and I was coming out in 3rd gear close to 4k. Right when I hit 4k, same thing happened. Revs went straight down, tried to give it gas and revs didn't go anywhere. So I coasted off the freeway, and while I was going down I put it in second and it worked like normal again.
Someone suggested fuel pump on another board. And one of my friends suggested that maybe my timing belt isn't tensioned properly. With the valve cover off (before all this happened) I noticed that there was slack in the timing belt area, between the top of the cam gears, depending on where where the valves where, etc. At certain positions the belt was tensioned, and at times it could be pushed up and down about an inch. Some people told me this is normal but I'm not too sure...
thanks all

I would think that if your belt wasn't tensioned, either the car would run like **** all the time, or it would have slipped and taken a few more valves with it.
I'd do a fuel pressure test, and see what kind of pressure it's making at idle and 4-5000rpm. Pressure should increase with rpm to an extent.
Also, change fuel filter, and check all the lines for leaks and miosture...
When was the last time you tuned it up, as in new plugs, wires, button, rotor cap, air filter, fuel filter, 02 sensor, etc... It doesn't last forever, and it might be hurting performance and making the car do that.
And, since you let your belt brake, as they are to be changed every 60k at max, I'm asuming that you either bought the car used and didn't get it changed, hotrod the hell out of it and deserved it breaking, or just don't perform routine maintenance.
It's VERY important to maintain a car properly, and constantly check and re-check EVERYTHING, especially at oil changes, as you're already under the hood...
But, this is just my opinion...

yeah, I was thinking that it would be go or no go as far as the timing belt. but who knows, maybe someone can chime in on it. But maybe it isn't tensioned as much as it should be?
I already did the fuel filter while the car was down. I have a brand new short ram on there. The distributer went out prior to all this and I replaced that. Spark plugs have ~10-15,000 on them. Wires... still the same ones from the previous owner.
Also, I failed to mention that the idle is at 1k (supposed to be 500-700) and I've been messing with the idle adjusting screw with no luck.
where can I get a fuel pressure test? i'm assuming anywhere... There are no CEL's either. And it's only happened twice so far. But twice is too much. There have been numerous occasions when I've hit 4k or a little above it, and it didn't happen.
thanks for your reply
