1990 EF Hatch - B16a - YS1 LS Grinds in third in high RPM's
Hey all ,
Just got meh a nice 90 EF with a 91 b16a and I am trying to figure out what exactly I can do about this tranny issue . It will shift fine at low rpms but if i get on it the second (rarely) and third gear (most of the time ) grinds a bit . Its not a crazy grind just more of a small farting sound if you know what i mean .
I have looked through a bit of threads and it seems this may be a common problem with the ys1 ls tranny . Should i look into getting the tranny fixed or maybe just look at a new tranny maybe a gsr or lsd ?
Any ideas ?
Would a rebuild be alot to do in parts ?

Your synchros are getting worn (or more likely the ring)...
As far as what you should do... that is all on you; depedning on what your unique situation in life is... Only you know what you can/should do.
I have lots of ideas.
That can depend on if you are upgrading or staying stock, having a shop do it or you are doing it yourself. Cheap as a couple hundred/ the sky is the limit...

My buddy's integra was grinding going into third.
We replaced the tranny fluid with Honda MTF and the grind wasn't as bad. Sure, it didn't fix it, but you hardly notice it now... Only temporary, blah blah blah.

try some penzoil syncromesh , if that doesnt help then its time to pull it out and replace the syncros
also check your shift linkage...worn/loose joints, bushings etc can cause grinds.
but most likely the synchros need to be replaced. gearspeed has them...

B Series tranny's syncro's are a common problem, usually being that 3rd gear one, rebuild it if you can

Carbon synchros work much better for high RPM shifting. The synchro acts as the brakes for the gear. If has not slowed the rpms enough to synchronize the gear with the shaft speed the gear will clash with the sleeve enagagement teeth. You will probably need a synchro and sleeve set.
If someone has filled the trans with 75W-90W gear oil instead of Honda MTF it can also cause shifting problems due to the thickness of the oil.

im going to go ahead and put honda mtf in and make sure it was filled with right fluid . i know the last owner liked to cut corners with this car and i wouldnt doubt it if he did do such a dumb thing . i may look into a synchro replace on this tranny that should get er goin right .
hey Synchrotech-Transmissions
if i take a quick snap of my trannys serial can you point me in right direction as to what rebuild kit i would need ?
I dont know much about the tranny accept that its for a b18 i think , if you can tell me what motor the tranny comes off of that would be nice too . still in the water with trying to figure out everything about this car and its swap .

The YS1 came as a B16 JDM close ratio, B17 USDM GSR, and B18 USDM LS.
Unfortunately ther is no way to tell by the serial number. I can ID it by the gear tooth count if you decide to open it up.
