Default First Drive with B16 in. Just a few questions?? (kinda long)

Finally put my car down on the ground and took her for a drive. Still have a very minor coolant leak(above upper hose), fixable in 20 min or so. I was running with open header (and new clutch) so I dint get past 5k in third, but I like it alot! I have the J1 tranny with SIR linkage, and its very smooth shifting. No grind in third...I was crossing my fingers.

Anyway heres my problems...

Code 17 with Tach working, but not speedo? What should I do? I searched for a while and found people thinking that this gets disconnected in the cluster?? Can I hit V-tec with this code?? I tried but am unsure. I have the Pr3 so I should of hit by 5k right?

Could not get the heat shield on the header? Is this bad? Seems to get really hot in there. I retained ac so I hope the wiring does not get fried. Its not routed the best way probably.

Last but not least. Temp gauge. It goes up to about 3/4 of max temp, and then the fan kicks on and brings it to 1/2 almost instantaneously. Is this normal? If not what Am I changing?

Oh yeah....

Heading back down the street heard something go flying not sure what? Maybe a tool or something but I was seriously stressing. I'll probably spend way too much time looking it over now.

Thanks for any help provided. Its very appreciated.

First of all - good job on the swap. I know how it feels to finally get things done. But at the same time I know how it feels to still have bugs in the system.

As for the Code - I don't know... Sorry!

Header Heat Shield - If you can't bolt the heat shields on properly, don't worry about it. Just make sure you keep all wiring a good distance away from the header. Pretty much all aftermarket header's won't accept a heat shield anyway.

Temp Guage - First fix the coolant leak. You most likely have some air in the coolant system, make sure the radiator is full of fluid, along with the reservior.

Noises on the road - You heard something go flying? Heh, I know how that feels like. I just finished my motor swap also, and I'm totally paranoid about sounds. It wouldn't hurt to double check your front suspension... Including the radius rods & crossmember.

It's possible that you just ran over a piece of metal or something....

Good Luck!

You probably lost a tool, I knwo I lost a wrench or two while doing my turbo and SC installs in the past.

As for the speedo, on my g2 teg I had that same issue. For me it was due to the gear on the speedo cable being stripped out. My ODO was actually going slightly backwards though, so I never fixed it.

How did it drive?

Open header + b16a = very loud vtec
You would be very sure if you hit vtec or not. Maybe your tach is off if you say you took it up to 5k, also do a quick check on your wiring if you are not confident. But like i said you would definately know if you hit vtec.

A code 17 will cause VTEC not to engage...the PR3 seems to enagage a little after 5 K at least mine does.

How did it drive?
Even though the drive was just around the block, It was so nice to drive my CRX again. Almost 3 weeks of downtime because of school in between.

Everything feels very smooth. I get a little vibration in the steering wheel when I let of the gas woith open header (back pressure). I thought it was going to feel a lot heavier on the front end. I have my konis all the way loose in the front.

I dont think it hit vtec due to code 17. I thought ecu had to know your going atleast 15 miles an hour? Im going to check both sides of the VSS cable hopefully today.

Yeah VTEC is dependent on the VSS reading as it is on a bunch of other sensors as well.

With mine the cable will come out without the gear (tranny side) What hold that in there? I thought there was a little clip? Maybe is came off somehow.
Hopefully I can get the damn thing out today, no love with it in the few minutes I had before school yesterday. Have to have it running good before the meet on the 26th!
