I saw that someone yesterday is having the same basic problem that I am having. Did not see any resolution, only to convert to Manual.

What I have going on is that when I start the car it may or may not engauge in a gear. R,D4,D3,D2 just revs up like in neutral. Turn off engine and restart it will engauge. It will go for a little while then disengauge. Turn off and restart it it will move. Seems like it does not always go into low. It acts like it is trying to move in D4.

I do not feel that it is mechanical but electrical. Could this be the ECU or shift valve?
Fluid looks Ok. Doesn't appear to have antifreeze in it. Doesn't smell burnt.

Please Help....

 

Is the CEL on? Throwing transmission codes? Honestly it sounds more like the tranny or torque converter is cooked. These things really weren't known for electrical problems like what you're describing. Sucks you weren't closer I've got one of those transmissions sitting here I'd sell cheap just to get it out of my way.

I looked around this site and others. I have seen this problem brought up quite a few times but never seems to get an answer one way or the other.

 

I dont know why, or how you'd get antifreeze in your transmission oil...
are you sure your checking your trans fluid? the orange stick = engine oil...
the yellow stick with the circle (much shorter stick) is your trans....its over behind your air intake...

Check your fluid...then do a drain + fill.....

Ive been reading alot lately that there was a major recall on linear solenoids. It does affect 2000's...so might look into changing that. Was the car shifting hard previously? If so...maybe change the linear solenoid---yours might just be clogged/bad/etc...

SYMPTOM

*The transmission shifts harshly, or it may stay in first gear. The harsh shifting is more noticeable on the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts under light throttle. It is not affected by operating temperature. The MIL may be on with DTC P0730 or P0715 stored.*

PROBABLE CAUSE

*Contamination of the linear solenoid and its associated passages inside the transmission, or a broken spring internal to the transmission.*

*Flush the transmission with Genuine Honda ATF-Z1, then replace the linear solenoid. If shift feel is not affected, replace the transmission.*

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Drain the transmission. Refill it with Genuine Honda ATF-Z1.

3. Start the engine.

4. With your foot on the brake pedal, shift the transmission to D4

5. Release the brake pedal. Press on the accelerator, and bring the speedometer up to 50 mph. Make sure the transmission shifts through the first three lower gears and into fourth, and that the torque converter locks up.

6. Apply the brakes to stop the front wheels.

7. Shift to reverse, and then to neutral.

8. Repeat the shifting procedure (steps 4 through 7) four more times.

9. Turn off the engine.

10. Repeat the above drain, refill, and shifting procedure (steps 2 through 9) two more times.

11. Drain the transmission. Reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer. Refill the transmission with Genuine Honda ATF-Z1.



12. Disconnect the linear solenoid electrical connector. Remove the mounting bolts, then remove the linear solenoid.

13.Inspect the linear solenoid mounting surface on the transmission. Remove any contamination.

14. Install the new linear solenoid. Reconnect the electrical connector.

15.Use the PGM Tester to erase any DTCs in the powertrain control module (PCM).

16. Test-drive the vehicle to check the shift feel. If it still shifts harshly, install a remanufactured transmission.*

Transmission cooler is a brass tube that runs through the lower rad tank, occasionally the tube rots through and coolant and transmission fluid mix. I've never seen or heard of it happening on a '92 - '00 Civic though. I have heard of it happening on Odysseys though.

It's almost never the linear solenoid despite that TSB. It's easy to check though, remove the liner solenoid and apply 12v to it momentarily see if it clicks and see if the spool valve inside moves. If yes for both it's good. Also make sure the little screen isn't clogged.

It just acts strange. Worked on alot of cars in my time and repaired alot of tranny's. Never a Honda though and just doesn't feel mechanical???
