Default Calling you guys making 700whp+, What head work is needed on a GSR head?

I have the bottom end planned out already, but I am kinda confused on all I need to replace in my GSR head. I have already done the springs, retainers and valves. But my machine shop is telling me I need to drop all this money on all these various parts, which i cant remember, that are not broken or wore out, I am not really sure if I trust him he is an old big block chevy guy. Any help

Maybe valve guides and valve seals is what he's trying to get you to replace? Its always a good idea to freshen up what you can afford while your in there. I would think valve seals would be easy and cheap while your there. Valve guides may be optional.

Lots of guys have been 700+ on stock gsr heads with just springs and retainers.

he checked and replaced the guides as needed when he replaced the rest of the parts and also replaced all of the valve seals. So all I "should" need is a good port job and call the head good?

I made over 700whp on a completely stock ported GSR head on 24lbs. It had Brain Crower springs and retainers and stock valves and Skunk2 pro1 cams.

The port doesn't need any work. It's a function of the cams and the turbocharger assuming a decent intake/exhaust manifold.

Supertech/Ferrea/Skunk valvesprings/retainers and any valves with a sealed up valve job (CHECK each valve seat, don't assume) and guides that aren't worn the f*** out and you should have no problem.

Are you talking about the PFC hatch? I am stationed in the springs but am currently deployed. When I get back is when the motor is going in and getting tuned. Who does the tune on your car? I was thinking about trying to get Sam at importsports to do mine. Any suggestions?

Stock gsr cams don't hold tq at high rpm. The ticket to power in a gsr head is a simple equation of Skunk2 Pro 1's, good valvesprings and a good valve job

I made 858whp @42psi on a stock port head/cams with aftermarket springs n retainers. I run it at 48psi at the track. I think with a good cam like a pro1, I could make more power at less boost with a better power band.

It's already been confirmed that you make plenty of power with a stock head. I wouldn't run stock springs n retainers on any car making 700+, if you're making that much power, you're obviously beating on it hard at the track and you just run the risk of engine failure.

Also, if money is tight, spend it on a good valve job vs. a port job.

I'm basically doing the same thing... it takes a gang of boost to make decent power it take me 52psi (s372) to go 155mph @ 6100ft

I ran the stock valves at that power for almost 3years and just recently switched to full ferrea valve train. I would've still been running them if I hadn't finally bent a few haha.

We made 743 uncorrected in Denver, stock port head with ctr cams, springs and retainers. Just replace what needs to be replaced. Don't get crazy

thanks, that is around the power level I want to be at. I currently have the gsr cams and was planning on going to the skunk2 pro1's. Would the ctr's be a better choice? It is gonna be a sleeved 2l lsvtec built by erl any comments on the choice of bottom ends or does it sound ok?

I'm still on stock gsr cams. I decided to go upgrade the valvetrain this year so either cams or suspension next season.
