Default question about 1st time fire up

so i am going to be putting my motor into my car and possibly firing it up for the 1st time in a few weeks or so, but i have one MAJOR concern that i would like to address.

if i am installing a turbo that is brand spanking new, and has never been ran, what do i do about the initial fire up and the foreign material floating around in the motor when i DO start it up for the 1st time? meaning all the metal bits. i do not want any of that **** in this turbo. PERIOD. what should i do?

start the car n/a with a few warming cycles there should be no metal bits (fod)
i use rottela t for break in cycles
check you valve clearance and timing followed by a compression check nad any codes
then after 3 or so complete warming cycles change the oil and put your kit on then tune just my 2cents

have you personally used this method with a new turbo/motor setup before?

as long as you use the right oil feed you feed to the turbo it will be filtered, make sure you prime the turbo before you start it up and you should be fine

what do you think dsm guys do? they have no Naturally Aspirated options and they never run into problems

ive done countless setups where i do first start ups with the turbo setup already installed, if you took the proper precautions there should be minimal if any metal shavings in the motor

disconnect distributor and injectors and spin motor over until oil light goes out. Spin engine over for ~20 secs after light goes out. Reconnect dizzy and injectors, and start it up. heat cycle a few times then change oil. Dyno session.

assuming waiting each time for like 30 min for it to cool down?

Anything built for a turbo will be put together loose, and will require boost pressure to seat the rings correctly. Ideally you have the rigns seated in the first 20 minutes - bring the engine up to operating temperature and then shut it down, check for leaks, and then fire it back up and proceed to tune/break in the engine. Proceed to accel and decel in gear a whole bunch, on street or dyno.

There's good advice in this thread. Run the turbo's oil feed from a filtered source (oil sandwich plate), crank with the dist unplugged to prime the system before initial fire, etc.

I would also set the rings by driving the car and letting off the throttle at higher speeds while still in gear which will create pressure.

i am really particular about running this turbo on the 1st time start up. could or would it be safe to run it n/a for the 1st few heat cycles just to make sure i get most of this **** out of the motor before i go back and add the turbo? i have a sandwich plate installed already so i will be getting oil from a filtered location already.

Just make sure to prime the turbo before turning over the motor. I did the same thing with my freshly built motor.
