how can i find out what year the block is from?
If it's complete with ignition wires, you can usually tell by looking at the year on the ignition wires. Sometimes it's a bit of a long shot b/c they're replaceable items.
I can't think of any othe rmarkers right now.

well..its a built block i got from importbuilders..and all it says is b18b. still nothing solid.
I dont know if USDM engines are the same as JDM ones, but on my JDM B18C, just under the valve cover are 3/4 little circles with numbers around each circle, the first relates to the month and then next to the year (dont know what the others are for). There will be a line running diagonally across each circle and it points to the number which indicates the month/year. I know this is on the head, and not the block, but i imagine there is possibly the same sort of indicators on the block somewhere.
I can aproximate it for you.... B18B is '94+ LS, we all know this. Look at your distributor, are there 2 wire harness plugs on it, or just one? 2 plugs means it's a '94-95 OBD-I (assuming the head came with the block). 1 plug is OBD-II+, 96+.
