Icon2 MSD Digital 7 Rev Limit vs. Gear Retard

On a turbo application... which is a better way to lighten up the hit off the line as well as down the track? Pro's and con's with each would help. Thanks in advance!

I might be able to help you a little here.....

Using the gear retard would be the easiest way to do it. I'm assuming you are using a clutch switch to activate the 2-step rpm? Basically once the clutch is released, the MSD box tells itself that it's in first gear and then when there is an rpm drop of 600-800 rpm, it advances it's setting to the next gear(retards, shift lights, etc).....so you might run into a problem there if you 'pedal' the car at all. You can also change this rpm window so the gear change isn't so 'sensitive'.

The other way to do it would be to use the 'Step 1,2, and/or 3' retards. The step 1 retard I believe is the pink wire, and you would just apply power to this wire to activate those particular retard settings. These are kinda neat because you can turn them on and have them never turn off, or you can turn them on, put a timer on it and then it turns off after the timer elapses.(This is what we just recently used on a nitrous car)

With the Digitial 7 box, there's usually a couple different ways to 'skin the cat' when it comes to setting up retards.

Hope I helped ya a little bit.

Thanks for the reply! Seems like not too many people are running the Digital 7 or they're real secretive about its capabilities . Would you say that limiting the power by way of timing retard/gear as opposed to the rev limit/time is better or just easier to setup? Also... i'm assuming that the msd will recognize a gear shift if the rpms drop anywhere below the preset rpm per gear.. correct?

yea, no one here will tell you how to set it up. Best bet is call msd and they can guide you to the right direction.

I dont need to know how to set it up... I just wanted information on which is a better way to dial back the power in the motor.

If I were in your shoes, I would travel down the gear retard road before giving the motor all the power it has and then limit it by rpm....I can't see how running the motor up against a rev limiter would do any good for the life of it.

I think the default setting from MSD for gear changes is either a 600 or 800 drop in rpm.

I use rpm vs time along with ignition retard vs time for first gear only. Every car will have a little different tune up in it son just do what the car likes.

it that case set the msd for both and let us know which one works better.
