Default VW/Audi Turbo

Has anyone used the turbocharger off of a Volkwagen or Audi? My friend has a 1999.5 Audi A4 1.8T with 40,000 miles. He is going to do a K04 upgrade, so I can buy his K03 turbo if I'd like. How would this compare to getting a Garrett T3 from a junkyard? I'm looking to do a low-cost, low-boost (200whp on b18b) junkyard turbo.

Ben

You would have a hard time finding a flange to mount it to. Not a standard T3 flange. Plus the Ko3 is ridiculously small. The Ko4 is not much better, both are smaller than a T3 .48/.42 that you could get off a Saab. I'm surprised that Audi would even use these turbo’s on the S4. I was very disappointed the first time I saw them. These small turbo’s are also the reason that most VW 1.8t’s chipped to 18psi only put down 200whp. VW people who have done a turbo conversion to the T3 super60 have seen 250whp at 15psi.

are there any other factory turbos that would be realistic for diy turbo kits? what about diesel trucks? what do they use?

I had planned on the saab turbo, but looking at the compressor maps it looks like they only flow about 17 pounds/min @ 7 psi... that isnt enough for a b18c is it?

Old 300zx came with a T3 .63/.60 people with smaller displacment keep the Saab .48 turbine and swap out compressors from the Saab .42 to the Nissan .60.

Ford SVO Mustang and Thunderbird TC ('87-88?) both ran T3-60s as well.

K03's are very small turbos. They have a nice punch at low end. Max boost is 1 bar. They run out of breath at 5k in an Audi.

The k03 turbo is very small and it is not a very good turbo, they have been known to blow up if they aren't keep cool. They do, however, work *very* well on the S4. Smaller turbos spool up very fast, and on the S4, peak torque comes at 1800 rpm.

On my S4, I am running 17PSI on k03s and they work pretty well. I am making power all the way to redline, and the car pulls very hard with zero wheel spin. I am going to upgrade to k04s next year when my k03s explode.

I am running a Greddy kit in my civic, and it seems to take forever to spool, but once it does, and once traction is found, it becomes a scary ride!

My advice: Forget the k03s. Its a shitty turbo. Get k04s instead, if you want a smaller turbo to reduce lag.
