Sounds like the isb is going if it where the pilot bearing you would have noise when the clutch pedal was pushed in

thanks for the input, i thought it would leak oil from the block when pilot bearing goes, how can you differentiate if its the TOB or ISB?

Throw out bearing is the pretty big bearing that comes in all clutch kits.

Like the pilot bearing the TOB only will make noise when the you start to depress the clutch pedal. As the TOB comes into contact with the pressure plate the bearing starts to make noise. As the pressure on the TOB increasses the noise can go away.
Edit: the pilot bearing has nothing to do with being an oil seal, the pilot bearing is installed in the flywheel. Behind the flywheel is the main bearing and main bearing oil seal is where oil will leak from when it goes bad.

Pretty simple (for the most part):

clutch let out and making noise - ISB
clutch pushed in and making noise - TOB

got it, thanks

its gonna cost him a lot of money replacing ISB and the clutch kit from a shop, they charge 600 for labor

another question , the car is 6sp, the first gear grinds when throwing it in fast. is this related to the ISB going bad, if not is it a good idea to have them inspect and replace first gear/sychro?

6spd? What car/motor is this? To replace the ISB and clutch $600 doesn't sound all that bad. Tell him to buy his own parts they are fairly cheap. To change the ISB he would have to take the transmission apart. Depending on which motor this is for he might be better off finding a used transmission.

The grinding sounds like the syncros which is going to make that bill go up a good bit I'm betting.

its a 02 sentra spec-v , 2.5L. he is gonna buy a exedy kit form ebay and other OEM part from local nissan dealer. the shop said they dont honor the warranty if you use your own parts, if they order parts is gonna be kragen or auto zone brand and cost a lot more, the concern is no one knows if a used tranny is still ok .
