b20 vtec knock question

Default b20 vtec knock question

sup ht my b20vtec was knocking but itll only knock when i start it..
when it idles it idles perfect no noise at all. it also knocks when i drive it about 4k rpm. can it be a rod knock?

Drain the oil and look for metal shavings.

If you saw metal shavings then it's time for a rebuild. The more you drive it, the worse it'll get.

It prob wasn't that bad if it was only when it was started.

But its prob toast if you been driving on it

i checked all the bearings they werent spun or smashed up u think i can still save it and put it new acl race bearings?

And hope all the clearences are good after you put them in? Now is not the time to try to be cheap. Pull it appart and find out which bearing your shavings came from.

If its a main make sure the crank isn't scored, if its a rod, make sure the rod and crank aren't scored.

i checked my rod bearings the crank wasnt scored still needa check my mains

i wasnt driving it for long when i noticed it i was on the freeway it took me like 20 mins to go home and i barely drove it after that

Unless he is running a set of low silicon forged pistons with a large p2w clearence, I highly doubt it would be piston slap. More so though because it wasn't at start up, but rather when he was on the freeway.

Idk personally from my limited knowledge base... a knocking sound around 4k rpms is usually a rod bearing.
