Hey guys, I recently bought a '94 CX hatchback with a fresh JDM D15B swap with 45k on it. I want to do some general maintenance/tune up on it and I just need to know what to look for. For instance, if I go to Autozone and they ask me what car this is for, should I tell them '94 Civic or did the D15B come from a different car (such as a CRX, Del Sol, etc.). I just don't want to buy the wrong stuff for my car. Also, should I use synthetic oil or just non-synthetic 5w-30? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

You can use synthetic if you want to. i personally dont, but many people do. A JDM D15B is basically identical to a USDM 92-95 Z6. Just the crank is different for the most part. I mean there are some other differences but they are not important when it comes to buying parts for it. So a 92-95 Civic EX or Si will give you the right replacement parts for the most part. ANd if you are getting body mounted parts (fuel filter, etc) then its for w/e year your car is.

 

Synthetic oil vs non synthetic....
My take---- its works out to be about the same....synthetic oil is more expensive, and lasts 2x as long....where as non synth is cheaper, and breaks down faster.

Personally I run non synth in my older cars (prior to 04) and synth in the 05 and up. My personal reason is I like to keep an eye on the older cars, so changing the oil every 5k miles gives me the extra reason to check things out. Plus I do it myself anyhow so really changing oil is like a 10 minute job at most and it gets me looking things over under the car to keep things more maint'ed

I personally dont like waiting 10k miles to change my oil. - my mom has a 2011 camry se and it dealer spec is 10k per oil change. I also have another car that specs 7500 miles per change...
And my buddy uses AMSOIL and changes it once every a year...

I still cant get around my head with that...I dont even like waiting 3-5k on my older cars...

Oh and with synth...if you go synth...you cant go back...

So...pick one, and stay with that. If you try switching around, one synth, then back to conventional oil....youll ruin your seals...

ok i am unsure what oil is currently in my car. how can i tell whether it is synthetic or not?

no its fine.

 

just tell u have a 1992-1995 honda civic ex/si with 1.6 vtec all those parts will be the same... and sythethic oil is usually used in newer cars b/c it a thinner oil... since motor is older should use regualar conventional oil or high mileage oil will be the best way... but certainly sythetic oil u can use wouldnt hurt anything...

You fools are backwards.

If it's always been ran on conv and you switch, **** might go down.

Once it has had synthetic, you can do whatever the **** you want.
