Default CRV died on the road. Help?

First of all, I'm not a super-mechanical person, but my dad is. But he's not computer savvy, so I'm posting this here and hoping for some help so he can work on the car.

So, my '98 CRV died on the highway yesterday afternoon. Its at 181k mileage and just had the transmission replaced in January. We also replaced the radiator and the distributor in 2010.

The way it failed made it seem like it was out of gas. While on the side of the road, I could turn over the engine, but it didn't catch fully, it would kind of sputter-start, but never fully engage.

My thought, as someone with no real mechanical knowledge was that the fuel pump wasn't working or something having to do with the fuel injection.

Anyone here have some ideas on how to troubleshoot it, or some ways to test things in order to narrow down the issue?

Would really appreciate any help. Thanks a lot! :D

does it have spark?
does the engine light cycle on and off when you put the key in the on position?
remove a spark plug and crank the motor while someone holds the spark plugs cloise to the valve cover.
get a 22mm wrench and slightly loosen the big nut on the fuel rail. turn the key on and see if it sprays everywhere. ( be smart about doing this of coarse) when was your timing belt replaced?

you said you replaced the dizzy, did you set the timing as well? like ihaterust said check the spark and i would get some fuel injector cleaner and do a new fuel filter, both very easy and cheap starting points (fuel filter) is just the bracket and a couple of bolts that are right under the hood on the firewall...if you still got problems come back and we can tell you where to go from there

Thanks guys, we'll try it out.

The distributor was replaced in like January of 2010.

I'm not sure when, if ever the timing belt has been replaced.

timing belt should eventually be changed but for now it has nothing to do with car not running, unless the belt snapped in half then it would be part of the problem lol

i have seen old timing belts that had a few teeth skinned off. if you remove the valve cover the belt is still there and still tight but the belt doesnt turn when you crank it over lol.

op. it doesnt matter if you recently replaced any parts. **** breaks. check the fuel pressure at the 22mm nut. i extrememly doubt your fuel filter is so blocked that your car wont start. when cars die during driving they typically either run out of fuel or spark. usually the coil or ignitor in the dizzy overheates and you wont get spark. could also be main relay but thats usually an intermittent problem. im pretty sure you need a dizzy. does your engine light come on then go off when you turn the key on? do you here the main relay clicking when you cycle the key? these are things we need to know so we can help you. i have been working on hondas for 15+ years. i have seen pretty much every situation.

even if no CEL try to get it scanned using local autozone scanner. Seems like an issue with the primary O2 sensor but usually it will still allow the engine to start

I say its the distributer. I had a 98 civic and 90 accord have the same issue. And all 3 of these cars share the same looking/style distributor. The ones that failed on me were auto parts store rebuilt pieces of Sh*t.

its funny you blame it on rebuilt pieces of ****. why were they put on in the first place?

how the hell is an o2 cel going to stall the car and cause it not to start?
