Question about stock head studs coming loose under 'high' boost
Alright, so I've been running the car on the rebuilt motor, went to Cali and back (from CO), ran the car about 15-25 times at the drag strip (having to do w/ our IDRC event, which you'll
be able to see me on ESPN2 on Dec. 10th in the SR-1 team challenge).
Anyway, back on track again, I reused the head studs off the '99 B18C1 I'm running right now, and was concerned that the head might be coming loose. I'll explain.
I had been running Mustang 30# injectors in the car (fuel rail bored to fit them), but that was NOT enough for boost levels in the 15-20psi range, so I opted for the 42# injectors. The trouble is, when the machine shop bored the fuel rail to fit these injectors, they made it a reall tight fit to where it's physically difficult for a human to push the injector inlet into the rail.
It's all about convenience when I was putting the injectors in, so I've found the easiest way to get them into the rail is to put all 4 injectors into the intake manifold, then bolt the fuel rail down onto the injectors.
So I started doing this with the 42#er's and I snapped the driver side rail bolt head off into the Victor X manifold, then stripped the center one out. Yeah, I'm a dumbass. I still got the passenger side one right?? Anyway, that's no problme, since the easy out didn't work, I'll just heli-coil it.
So I turned the car on like that, and took it out for a test drive, I got one good pass through 1st thru 4th, then the car started missing bad in Cylinder 4. I think it's either becuase the injector wasn't possitioned right because I can't bolt the rail all the way down on it, or the head is starting to come up off the deck of the block becuase I'm using stock headstuds. What do you guys think? It's popping and running and hesitating all weird like it's not getting fuel, pump is priming and everything....

it takes alot to lift a head. 15-20psi of boost shouldnt stretch stock head bolts unless there is detonation. Id be willing to bet the injector wasnt in right when u boosted, causing you to detonate and lift the head. I dont think the problem is in the head bolts, I would go out of my way to get a reliable fuel set up in there.
