so i drilled through my oil filter fitting/bolt and broke it loose to install my oem oil cooler on my ls block, i did how ever notice at the back of the fitting are jackets for the oil passage with metal bits sitting there. i removed as much of them as i could by hand. would it be logical to remove the allen bolt on the trans side and run a magnet through the jacket to remove further remaining metal bits? or should i remove the oil pump, the allen bolt, as well as the oil cooler and cover up other access areas and spray pressurized air through it to clear everything out?
I would try to get rid of a much metal shavings as I could. I can't really picture what your talking about so I can't give you a better answer

The part where the oil filter screws onto. I drilled a hole through it in order to remove it, got metal shavings in the hole where the oil comes out of(oil galley) and cleared as much of it out by hand as I could. I'm still converned as to how I should clear the rest out.
I just did this(added oil cooler) to my ls block a few days ago. That fitting is threaded in and all you have to do is unscrew it with pliers or vise grips just FYI. If your able to it would be best clean all the passages. Have you already drilled and tapped the back of the block for the coolant passage?

Are the shavings from your drilling? If so, stick a magnet in there, maybe you'll catch a few more. Its gonna be hard to get it all out without complete engine removal/disassembly.
Why add the oem oil cooler/warmer? Its hardly worth any trouble, and really better off as a warmer, not a cooler. Add an external, front mounted cooler if you want to see any significant change in oil temps.

because i can? lol
but yeah, that was my initial thought. to put a mini magnet in there all the way to the oil pump.

You know, just because you can doesnt always mean you should, lol. Just sayin..
So the shavings are from the drill process then? Should have done a better job of keeping those shavings out of there in the first place (i.e. stuff a piece of paper towel in there to sort of seal it off before you drill). You may also have aluminum shavings in there from the threads in the block, in which case a magnet wont work.
On all the B series engines I've ever had I've always yanked those useless (imo) factory units off and installed an external cooler. But thats just me.

ya i kinda was like wtf
i shoulda put something in the center, but im gonna have to take the pan back off to have a fitting welded on any ways so ill check for debris after the removal of the pan. that way i can remove the allen plug, as well as the oil pump and do it the right way.
