Default how to change oil?

ok i know this sounds dumb but i just want to make sure i got everything cause im sick of paying 25 bucks for a oil change. I just need to have a filter and 4 quarts of oil right? then you just take off the oil plug let it pour out for a couple of mins take off your filter then put oil around the new one and out it back on along with putting the oil plug back on right then just add oil.... Thats the basics right... thanks for the info if i missed something

Well, how are ypu planning to discharge you old oil?

Hopefully, you are not going to dump it, or flash it down the toilet.

You will probably need to buy an oil filter tool in order to unscrew the filter.

Always use jackstands!!! Many people have been hurt!!!!

sequence:

1 pour engine flush. wait up to 5 mins.
2 loosen and remove oilpan bolt (check and clean)
3 loosen and remove oil filter
4 handtighten oilpan bolt
5 lubricate new oil filter and handtighten
6 poor 4 to 5 quarts of synthetic oil (as manual specifies, to full)
7 check for leaks (a habit of mine, get engine running for 5 mins. before taking off to let oil circulate)

and there you have it

1 pour engine flush. wait up to 5 mins.
This is the step that I would definetly skip...engine flushes

I always wondered way there was a charge for a washer everytime Honda did my oil change. I figured it out a while ago. Honda in my area wants $28 for a oil and filter change. Washer not included. Screw the dealer now. May take a little longer cause I can't stand under my car and do the change, but it saves money.

5 lubricate new oil filter and handtighten
VERY important unless you want to have a fun time getting it off next change... Unless of course you can turn your engine over with a twist of your hand that's what its like

Thats the basics right...
Yeah, you got the basics, but changing the filter on a Honda is the hard part. I use a floor jack and lift the front of my car as high as the jack will go. That way, I can move around under the car without scraping my arms on razor sharp heat shields and so forth. That's the easy way. Give yourself plenty of room to work.

Also, the longer you let it drain, the better. That's one of the coolest parts of doing it yourself. Sometimes I pull the plug on Friday night, and don't put it back in until Monday morning. Can you imagine your dealer doing that??? **** will drip out of your motor for a couple of days. If you don't need your car, let it drain.

Jack that puppy up, and let it drain as long as possible...

Agreed! Engine flush, so called, is usually nothing but kerosene. If you're going to do this - drain your oil - put the plug back in - put 4 quarts of kerosene in your engine - start and let idle for 5 minutes - then do a normal change. That will actually flush your motor. The other way doesn't do jack...

1. don't be directly under the filter when you screw the old one out
don't ask me why I know

2. some like to pour some new oil in the new filter, i usually don't (reason #1)

3. i usually add 4/5 of the requirement, start the engine idle it for a bit, let the oil drain back into the oil pan (use the time to check for leaks) then add more until its hit the mark. Dont want to add too much oil then have to jack it back up and repeat the process.

4. turn the new filter by hand until tight THEN use the filter wrench and give it another 1/4 turn, to avoid over tighten it.

5. Turn the oil drain plug snug is good, dont over tighten it. I even use a torque wrench

6. Prepare yourself for the rush of oil coming out, place your drain pan accordingly.

7. Clean the drain plug of any metal shaves

that's all I can think of right now, I am bored.

BE SAFE and have fun.
