why do you care if its the real hx? i never heard this question before. people ussually want to know if its a real si. Hx is not really the best model. they made a dx hx ex and si that year from what i understand, the only difference between them are interior options. dx might have black mirrors and door handles, someone correct me if im wrong.

A '96-'00 Civic which is a true HX from the factory would have a VIN beginning with the following characters: 1HGEJ7.

The engine code will be D16Y5. If you go to Honda with the VIN they can do a VNI Inquiry for free, which will tell you the original engine serial number (which is found under the engine code on the front passenger side of the block).

Luckily HXes aren't often cloned, but if you're looking for the hyper miler version Civic for this generation then I understand how you'd want to know it's a real one since not everyone out there knows even what engine to look for.

Good luck.

It's very possible that the OP is interested in this car for the great gas mileage, not the painted door handles.

The exterior appearance of a stock HX will include:

- coupe body style (the HX only came as a coupe)

- matte black unpainted door handles, mirrors, license plate garnish, sideskirts (DX coupe also has this. EX coupe has all painted besides the sideskirts and the Si coupe has it all painted.)

- no moonroof (DX coupe also has this. EX coupe and Si coupe both have moonroofs. Aftermarket moonroof will have the rubber seal on the roof, OE will be on the glass.)

- alloy wheels unique to this trim level (DX/EX has steelies with hubcaps, Si has other type of 15 inch alloys. Easy to replace, of course.)

More information on trim differences for USDM '96-'00 Civics here: 6G Civic Trim Differences

There is no all-encompassing "best" model out there.

You just asked about an ECU sensor going out on a car three months ago.

Just a tip, if you like power options, I was able to get up to 42mpg (highway) in my '98 EX coupe when it still had it's original engine (lowered and on Integra alloy wheels at the time).

For '92-'95 there was also a hatch version of the Civic that got good gas mileage (VX, the CX is also really light).

I'm currently daily driving an '88 CRX HF and got 43.5mpg my first tank.

Just things to think about. Granted I know the CRX is a tin can and I might die if someone t-bones me.

Glad to help.

Well, the HX is a coupe, a two door. There is a '98-'00 Civic GX sedan available but they are very very very very rare (I've seen ONE in person) and they run on natural gas, which could be a problem for some.

I don't see anything there that would make me doubt it's an HX. The HX (and DX) both have the catalytic converter attached to the exhaust manifold as shown in the last pic. Though the DX would have a different intake manifold, which would have the intake arm come off the top of the manifold.

Check that the windows don't get stiff going up or down. If they do, lubricate them with silicon spray (NOT white lithium) and roll them up and down a bit to get them lubed well. if they become very tough to roll up or down, roll them up and leave them like that until you can remove the door card and inspect and probably replace the regulator (decently common in these cars, though my EX hasn't done it in the eight years I've owned it).

Since it's an automatic then that car would have the CVT (continuously variable transmission). I've heard mixed reviews on them. Some say they last forever, and others say they don't. If you ever want to swap the transmission for whatever reason you'll have a few choices:

- Stay with a CVT HX tranny (other autos are not CVT).

- Swap to a manual transmission and use a manual HX ECU.

- Swap engine and transmission, ECU, etc. Normal engine swap type stuff.

But you might want to read up a bit on the HX CVT just in case. I can't claim I know much about them.
