Just got a 91 hatch w/b16a2 swap.....
I just bought a 91 hatch that already has the b16a2 swap for $1500. What I'm wondering is how can i tell if the p28 thats in the car is chipped? Any help would be great thanks....
I think that if you open the case there should be a chip on the board itself, I may be wrong and I'm also the guy that messaged you yesterday about your CRX so still waiting on the pics
yes, you open the case from the top of the ecu which should have a total of 5 screws.. one in the center and one on each corner of the case. Then when you look inside, you should look in one of the corners of the circuit board and you should be able to see the actual chip and whether or not it is removable... if its removable, then its chipped. If its not removable, then you have a stock p28.
Ok....well I opened the ecu. Looking at the guts with the plug jacks to your left, I saw what I thing is the chip in the bottom right corner. Looked different from all the rest. I tugged on it pretty good and it didnt come loose. So im guessing that its still the stock p28. Im also guessing there are some draw backs to still having the stock ecu.....
Well the drawback is gonna be mainly loss of power, and potentially running the engine lean. You're also running a dual-cam engine, on a single-cam set of fuel trims, ignition settings, etc. and you've got a couple of options.. you can either go and get the stock ecu chipped and have a chip installed for your engine.. or you can get rid of the stock ecu and get a pr3 computer for your engine. I personally would get the stock ecu chipped because after you do that, you can always have the ''correct'' ecu for any engine and/or setup you may want to drop in your car in the future by simply changing the chip and/or having it tuned.
VERY easy to spot the difference.
Non-chipped ECU does NOT have electrical components in these locations at bottom right of board

Chipped DOES have components.

That blue socket can be different as there are different types of sockets
You could even NOT have a socket in there, and hard solder the new chip in there.
If you can see a socket under the chip, look for a small lever on the side of the socket.
Lift the lever up and it will release the chip.
If there isn't a lever, it may require you to get creative with a small screwdriver OR get the proper tool to lift the chip out.
Screwdriver prying up evenly on both sides evenly and little by little works fine.
If you pry it up all at once fro one side it will bend pins.

It doesn't have to be removable to be chipped. It could just have a chip soldered in. A stock P28 will not run a B16 correctly. If indeed it is an unchipped P28, then this car was converted to OBD1 and you'll either need an OBD1 B16 ECU, or the P28 chipped, or you can take it to a dyno, get the P28 chipped, and get a tune.
Thanks to everyone for the help...a big THANKS to 4drEF for the pic. Opened the ecu again and there ARE chips there. Says SST dont know if that means anything or not...probably going to start another thread casue im having other issues with my ef....
