Post 4.7 final drive?

hey guys i just want to ask what 4.7 final drive means. and what is the diff between a non-lsd tranny and a lsd tranny.

cause im buyin a b16a with type r cams, type r valve springs, type r red valve cover, intake manifold, injectors, throttle body and distributor. and SiR non-lsd 4.7 final drive........ can you guys explain to me what 4.7 final drive is? is that a good thing or bad thing?

thankyou ^^

Don't you mean 4.78 final drive? That's the jdm type R final drive. I think ctr's had it too, but I don't know if it was only jdm ones. It's just a shorter final drive, meaning the motor will accelerate each gear quicker than say a 4.4 final drive. The non lsd part is the bad news. It means the differential is NOT a limited slip differential or lsd. Non lsd diffs spin one tire and lsd will spin both, giving better traction. So you have a tough one here, the 4.78 is a good find, but the non lsd isn't!

for comparison (and i hope i'm remembering correctly..) DX manual civics have a 4.105; EX manual civics have a 4.25. the higher the number the shorter the gear/quicker the acceleration/higher the torque multiplication/the more it's "geared down"... however you want to say it. and when you hear muscle car guys or off-roaders talk about axle ratios or the "rear end" that's the same as the final drive in our transaxles. although their axle ratios are usally some where in the 2.5-3.9 range.

Unless it is swapped in, only the jdm 98-01 ITR transmissions came with that gearing....maybe the ctr too, but not sure.

Clarify higher. Lower numerically is a "higher" or taller ratio, higher numerically is a "lower" or shorter ratio. So for example a 4.4 to 1 is a higher ratio than a 4.78 to 1.

There was never a B16 tranny with 4.78 final drive.

Honestly, I'd stay away from that swap. Who knows what it is, or how it's been treated.

would it be safe to assume the 4.785 from the ITR S80 is what we're talking about here? someone's just left off the last digit...

Yes, but ITR trannies had LSD. This is not an ITR tranny. Possibly a non lsd SIR unit with the final drive replaced... or possibly the owner doesn't have a clue about what he has.

I'd vote the latter

4.785 final means doing 80mph at 4800 rpm in 5th gear

we're trying but there is no such thing as the "best" transmission.

do you want the shortest geared or "quickest" (debatable) transmission or one that is geared in the middle? maybe even an LS long geared tranny?

what do you plan on doing with the car and how do you plan on driving it?
a B16 and ITR trans is better for city driving and tracks but take that thing to the freeway (especially with the 4.78 FD) you'll get a nice 4500-5000 RPM at 75.
