This is a very open ended question. What research have you done so far and which way are you currently leaning?

sure that you dont mean b16a? a b16b is a type r motor and isnt in the same class as a b18b. givin your choices everyone would pick b16b, lsd trans vtec not to mention double the price.

sure you know what a b18b is capable of?

b18b with b16a head done.
still have 1800 left over for headwork and parts.

im pretty sure everyone here is aware of the ls/vtec swaps but the original debate was for a b18b and b16b which really isnt a comparison.

B16B's are very expensive, and you really aren't gaining much from them. For not much more, you could have a B18c/ A JDM ITR swap. Both of those engines are better then the B16b.

I don't have experience with a actually b16b, but I do with a b16 that was put togther using almost all b16b parts. There was a difference, and the car was a little faster, but not enough for me to justify the amount a b16b costs..

Do your homework, you may find your self saving a lot of money.

B18B are cheap
B16B are too expensive

Why not GSR B18C1?

To the OP, the hp difference by going to the B16B CTR is only 15hp and 1ft lb torque more, plus you get an LSD tranny regardless.

Myself, i will never swap in a 1.6L engine by choice any more...no torque!! Bigger B18B, B18C vtec and B20 engines have a lot more "umff" on the street, and more fun to drive imo.

A lot of people go with the B18C or B18C1 for a good compromise for both hp output and tq. I would choose a gsr and day of the week over a B16B...and btw, the jdm B18C (SiR-G) makes 178hp and 128ft lbs tq stock, and can also be had w/lsd tranny

He asked what one would you pick. Not knowing if hes looking for a motor swap in his DD, weekend toy, track car, road racing etc.

If this is for a weekend toy or to be a beast on the street I would 100% say B16B. You already have the short gears from the CTR & the vtec head. All you would need is either a GSR or LS block to make it faster. Who builds LS's now adays? I'm gonna guess that the OP ment to put B16a down? If so I would still pick a B16a over a B18B if it's just gonna be kept stock. Just my .02 coming from someone that had a B18a1 for a good 1 or 2 before I swaped it.

Honestly, I wouldnt buy either of the 2. I would go, B18c1, B16. LS is just a cheap motor that needs a turbo kit for it to be any kinda fun unless you slap a Vtec head on it.

1.8L at least. Hard to make up for that low end power. a b20vtec would be really cheap and produces great numbers.

Actually, a lot of people build ls's still. Toss a p8r head on it, and you'll have the same size valves as a vtec head, just without vtec.
And you'll gain the torque that a b16 lacks.

I know of several road race cars that do.

The only reason I asked is becuase a lot of people would just hop on say the b16 becuase it has Vtec.

At the same time the B16 tranny makes up for the loss of TQ from the B16. The LS gears are very tall.

True, but what's stopping you swapping in a b16/GSR trans in favor of the ls?

I am not trying to argue here. b16'bs arent the greatest thing in the world, you can do better then a b16b for not much more. If you looking a B16b, take a look at the JDM ITR engine.

Finding a good shape b16/GSR sometimes can be alot of $$.

I'd rather rock the B16B for a DD then a LS just because my brother had the B17a1 in his GSR and it was fun as hell on the street. I always wanted to take his car cuz it was more fun for me haha.

On a side note, I wouldn't run either motor unless I was on a budget or the motor's were dirt cheap. I would without a doubt get a B16a over a B16B anyday.

why? a b16B is the same thing with 1 more tq and 15 more hp. 10 more then a jdm b16a.

i like my b16 that im running at the moment but i've been on the look out for decent b18b/c1/20 to help take my car up a level. super tq and short gears? great fun.
