Default transmission/shifting issues

Im helping out a friend with transmission issues hes having on his car. Heres the general info on the car: its a 02 SI completely stock with 132,xxx miles on it. The following are the problems hes been having:
-rough shifting
-occasionaly, the engine shakes when car is put into gear
-gears sometimes wont go in
-there are times when he needs to turn the car off in order to get out of gear

So far, he replaced the clutch slave, and clutch master cylinder, but that didnt fix the issue.

this past weekend, we removed the transmission to check out the clutch. Upon removing the pressure plate and clutch disc, i noticed that there was a crack and broken pieces of metal around the spring area of the disc. It also appeared that this was still the original clutch. Flywheel looked ok.

Heres where i need help from all you experts. Do you guys think the clutch is the culprit to the issues hes been having? For sure we need a new clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced, but i was wondering if there could be issues inside the transmission itself. Im not familiar with whats inside the transmission case, so a shop would need to handle this part. Do you guys think we should have the transmission inspected? I would hate to just change the clutch, re-install everything,a nd still have the same problem. The subframe is already a pain to put back. Anyway, i would greatly appreciate any inputs and comments.

Thank you.......

If it was broken by the spring definitely could be. You should take an actual picture of YOUR clutch so we can tell.

Isn't that an Exedy stage1 disc? That doesn't look OEM.

I'd say if you're suspicious about the transmission itself having problems I would definitely take it somewhere to at least have it inspected. It might be free but if its not then an inspection itself shouldn't be too expensive, assuming they find nothing is wrong.

But I've had clutches go out before (for the same problem as yours with a broken spring) and it's had the symptoms you've described. I think you'll be okay with just replacing the clutch.

Thanks! Yes, its still the stock clucth. Since we already have the transmission out, were going to have it inspected. We already ordered an Exedy OE Replacement clucth kit.

Nice, let us know if you find anything & how the new clutch works out.

If you plan on doing any mods, I'd at least order a stage 2. Even for a DD I would have a stage2 clutch, but that's just me. I like the firmness

Sounds like the clutch to me if the issues you described were with ALL gears and not just specific gears. If its only specific gears it could be a synchro issue or possibly even shift fork issue. Usually it will be the synchro and not the gear itself but there is the rare case where a main or countershaft would be messed up. A trans rebuild can be a good learning experience. Just go into it with patience, a FACTORY service manual and about three times the money you think it will cost.

For now, replace the clutch and see if the issue is still there. If it is, time for a rebuild!
