Icon2 What should I do trying to swap to vtec

Okay guys im new to the scene I have a 89 honda crx dx... it has a d16a6 in it, but i want vtec so can i just change over to a y8 or z6 head and keep the a6 bottom end or should I look for a z6 block I heard they were a little stonger...also i have the d15 tranny is there a final drive kit i can buy for it or should I just scrape it for a better one?

I'd go with the z6 block depending on how fresh your bottom end is. If it's low milage than mini me is a good cost friendly choice for you. But if your A6 block is pretty beat, I'd say build up a nice fresh z6. Make sure to get all the things for the Obd1 swap as well if you go the full z6 swap. Obd1 is where it's at Before you do that you'll also have to do the mpfi swap, or you can do them both at the same time if you have everything. Good luck!

Honestly I would agree with McGruber... the z6 for the money is definitely one of, if not the best d-series platform. With the conversion from obd-0 to odb-1 you will have endless possibilities for further tuning & performance upgrades.

Thanks guys I think my a6 block is pretty fresh It just came off a rebuild about a year ago the guy said it was in good shape. But I think Ill go with the z6 like you said it would be easier just to buy a swap instead of doing the mini me. I need a new tranny anyways. But thanks for the help!!!

I would do this. The last thing that you want as a noob is a wiring issue. Everyone says its not too hard if you know what you are doing but the problem is I have seen a lot of misinformation regarding wiring. I would stick with someone who knows what they are doing. Believe me you don't want to be tracing wirings for a short or wrong connection.

Ouch... sorry to see. Insurance? At least you're not crushing it lol. Good luck with the rebuild - you have a long road ahead of you.

No one (to my knowledge) sells USDM CRX front clips... the reason all you see is JDM is because that's how they have to be accepted into US Customs - two pieces, front clip and back clip... lol

ahh I see so I guess the only way I could get usdm is to buy a parts car here and clip it myself. all jdm clips are right hand drive correct.

Yes, that is correct. And yes all true JDM honda cars will be right hand drive.

i just built a fairly decent mini me...does a little better than the stock z6 but its your call and its possible to put the z6 head on and obd 0 block and harness youll just have to drill out the top dizzy bolt hole to match (i know cause mines done this way both with dpfi and mpfi) its better to just convert to obd I though for the tuning capabilites

Lol, yea that is correct. We do everything from a-z lol... tuning, turbo kits, motor builds, swaps, conversions, mild performance parts, full race design, etc.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/88-91-crx-ef-civic-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-1508680/ - this is a good source of information for EF Civics and CRX's. Should cover the majority of your questions. DPFI - dual port fuel injection (old school honda stuff lol), MPFI - multi port fuel injection... OBD is on-board diagnostics, and OBD-0, OBD-1, and OBD-2a/b are just different types of OBD systems. Hope this helps
