A Question on Stiff Shocks and Bump Absorption
So, if I have stiffer shocks, which most aftermarket ones are compared to stock shocks..will my car be less able to absorb big bumps on higher speeds? Like, will it be more prone to damaging my car from where the shocks connect to the body (shock tower? im not sure)..?
Because, every time I hit a bump, it's loud. With the stock ones, it seems like the shocks just eat the force and the force doesn't travel all the way to the body..whereas with stiffer shocks..seems pretty jarring.
I guess that's the compromise for better handling with stiffer shocks? I mean, I know that the softer your shocks are, they have less capacity to take bigger bumps in higher speeds too because they will bottom out whereas stiffer shocks will take a lot more force for them to bottom out..but it seems like with stiffer shocks, even though they dont bottom out, the force travels through the shocks onto the body..something's gotta give right?

no, shocks should absorb the shock. thats what they do. a "stiffer" shock may absorb the force at a quicker rate, but it doesnt mean it should crash or be loud. that just sounds like you have some binding issue, bad installation, or just other sources of play in your suspension that has nothing to do with the shock and the shock can do nothing about.
whats your set up? how low are you? are you riding on bumpstops? have bumpstops at all?

atm, im on stock struts and H&R springs..i think im lowered 2.5" from stock.. my front lip (CTR) is about 4.75 inches off the ground..its installed good, no problems. its not like its super loud like the shocks are blown or anything like that..i just meant its different from stock..my buddy and everyone else i know that are lowered and have stiffer aftermarket springs/shocks have the same "loudness"..
dude, your hitting your bump stops. you'll feel a little bit of a difference when you get the yellow's, but you still might be to low.
you think so? isn't it pretty common to slam eks with koni yellows and H&R springs? so is everyone doing that hitting their bump stops then?

shouldn't hear anything. if you are, your hitting something, it's ether bump stops, or the bottom of your car is hitting. more liking oil pan or exhaust. maybe even your uni-body(frame rail)
Your stock shocks are underdamped to deal with the stiff rates and suspension travel awarded by the H&R springs, I assume you ave the H&R race which are something like 550F/380R
The noise is coming from your stock shocks being underdamped and therefore hitting your bumpstops.
Get the konis on there and you have a solid setup.
