Default 93 civic DX planning 96 gsr swap - which ecu?

Hello all! I am new here and so far it's been more informative than any other forum I've found. Period.

All of my questions have been answered but one that I couldn't find in the FAQ's page.

Here is my situation:
I have a 93 dx civic and I am swapping in a 96 gsr powerplant soon. I have the gsr harness and ecu, but I hear obd2 ecus are horrible.

Would I be able to just chip my dx ecu? Or will I need a vtec ecu? I looked for an obd1 p72, but I can't find anything for less than $150.

If I am in the wrong section or there is already a post on this, please direct me. I couldn't find one. Thanks for any info guys!

OBD2 ECUs are horrible for what? Use the ECU for the engine-OBD2 P72.

I've heard from a few sources that they can't be chipped, tuned, etc. Plus I would need a jumper harness, and an obd1 to obd2a jumper would be expensive. I might as well buy the obd1 p72 if that's the case.

Royal pain in the *** in an OBD1 car, and in no way worthwhile. Much easier to just get the corresponding OBD1 version or a chipped and tuned ECU.

I saw 96 GSR but it looks like you're gonna have to bite the bullet and shell out the $150 then get it chipped and tuned. If you've already spent the money for the swap the buck fifty is chump change.

Would it make a difference if I chipped/tuned my stock p06 or a p28 instead of the p72?

Believe it or not I got a damn good deal on the gsr setup. :D

I run a converted P06 to work with my Y8. You can have the same done to your ECU and have the proper basemap put on it.

by the time you pay for chipping/tuning, youd be out your money for a p72. look around, they can be had much cheaper than 150.

But once chipped, he is ready for future mods as well...

You can purchase the kit to chip and VTEC your P06 ECU:
http://www.xenocron.com/combo-kit-ch...sion-p-55.html

Or we do the service as well if you would like to have it done.

You CAN find the OBD1 stock P72 ECUs for cheaper than $150 yes, but then you HAVE to wire in the knock sensor, which can be troublesome, and they are worthless IMHO

The only obd1 p72's I could find that weren't molested were more expensive than the services xenocron offers.

If I were to use the xenocron chipped p06, what all would I have to wire in besides vtec?

Thanks for all the info though guys. I'm not new to cars but I am new to ecu's and whatnots. lol.

not unless the p06 was chipped with a vtec chip itself. then u can wire vtec. if its just a chipped p06 and u wire vtec it will not work.

sorry...my question was vague lol. I meant if the p06 was chipped with vtec and the gsr basemap...what all would I need to wire up from the tower to the ecu plugs? Thanks again guys

Convert the P06. You'll want to get Hondata, Chrome, Neptune, etc if you do anything more than bolt ons anyway.
If you use Hondata, you can just chip the ECU and get a couple of relays and run VTEC and IAB control off existing circuitry. No need to add VTEC.
