I need help with piston rings please
Hi guys i bought some RS machine pistons off omniman Steve and now i'm trying to put the engine together. I noticed the top piston ring that he supplied me has no markings and no bevel like oem honda rings. I'm not sure if i should even use these aftermarket rings because i dont' want to disassemble the whole thing again if it's done wrong.

top ring

please anyone with information or experience with aftermarket piston rings please help
thanks

Close-up picture of the end of the ring?
You can most of the time feel and see the rounded corner of the top ring. At least I have anyway...

seriously yes
second ring i can see the ridge for sure

but the top ring i can't see nothin
it looks square on the inside of the ring, like there is no beveled edge at all. Do most aftermarket rings follow the same ridges/indicators as oem?

okay did some research and found this
http://www.rlengines.com/tech/Common_Ring_Types.pdf
looks like the oem piston rings are
top ring PL type
middle ring DS/BS type
what i got from Steve with my pistons
top ring SC type
middle ring DS type
anyone every use the SC type of upper piston ring? i wonder how it is vs oem honda design?

okay i did more reserach and i believe i have figured out what i have. Those are chrome lined piston rings, so there is no top or bottom side to it. They are very durable and made for industrial equipment
and from what i research are a little hard to seat properly, damn
Does anyone else have any comments?

if they are off the shelf rs pistons then you have hastings rings. if not you have npr nrg ring upgrade. which are the same rings cp's...etc come with

thanks projectTeg, do you know if the CP piston rings use the steel chrome liner on the top ring like on my top pic? i got these not from RSmachine themselves but from Steve the omniman. I have used hasting rings before on one of my builds and those rings are all marked and worked out great with no steel chrome liner in it. These ones i have never used or seen before? but i've always used oem rings and the one time i tried hastings.
Those look like the Hastings I had with my RS pistons. Top ring has no direction. Bottom ring has a pit mark on it that points up if I remember correctly? There should be a sheet that came with your rings.
actually now that you say that, i think the rings i did use before were the NPR ones. The other ones i've used are oem and those are easy to tell.
Maybe these are hasting rings then...oh man you just gave me a glimmer of hope
i was going to order new Arias piston rings for 84.5mm. Yours also had that silver/chrome ring around the outside of the top ring? and no definable bevels or anything like that?
thanks man....awesome, i do appreciate you sharing your info. I was starting to have my doubts about h-t support

so do hastings have no mark on them? when i got my RS machine pistons, the rings that came with it has a "N50" stamped on them. would they be hastings or arias?

Correct, they looked just like yours. You have a dimple on the 2nd ring right? 2nd ring is the only one that is directional, top ring can go either way and has no marks on them at all. Are you also missing the paperwork that came with the rings? You might be able to call hastings to verify if the dimple faces up or down. From my recollection it faces up.
If a ring has no markings, bevels, "lips", etc. they can go either way.
If the ring has a dimple, dot or marking the marking usually goes up.
If the ring has a "lip" or "edge", the edge usually faces down to "scrape" the cylinder.
that's awesome guys thank you.
yea top rings no top or bottom so can go either way
my second rings actualy has a marking on the ring that says top, then the scraper edge on the outside facing down
basically like this going down, awesome guys thanks

now i can continue building my b20, awesome awesome awesome

yeap, facing down. There's actually an indicator on the second ring itself that says "top", so that notch faces down. You can kind of see it in my picture above
When I bought new rings for my 50cc Honda engine the middle ring was beveled. After asking an aviation mechanic which way the bevel was supposed to go he said towards the top of the piston (according to the Honda general manual). So in taking them out I broke 2 rings. I bought a new set (same part number 13010-001-010) but the middle ring came with NO bevel, just the letter "N" stamped on one side which I placed with the letter towards the top of the piston. Now I am wondering if this engine will be okay without the beveled ring? I hope you can answer this question...Dan
