Default B20B vs. B20B1 vs. B20Z block only

Hi all,

I've done some research and would like to start a new engine build using a bare B20 block.

My question is that for the different version of the B20 block, are they all different because of the head?

Is the block for all 3 of these motors the same?

Also, any advantage/disadvantage to USDM vs. JDM?

Thanks!

Jdm has a higher compression

If I remember correctly, not all of them are predrilled for a knock sensor. Not that big of a deal, but it is a difference.

he's asking about building a BARE b20 block, so compression references aren't really necessary!

If you are looking to build a b20 block, pick one up and build it. JDM vs USDM wont make a difference in YOUR build

incorrect. The earlier jdm B20B were low compression, just like usdm

incorrect. "ALL" B20Z and JDM 99+ B20B were higher compression, and came oem "with" knock sensors

To the OP, the blocks are the same. The internals changes in 1999, including higher compression pistons

Perfect. This is the info I needed and was hoping for.

I'm looking for a bare block I just didn't know if I needed a B20B1 or B20Z etc.

I DO wan't to do the internals myself

Thanks man!

Side note, I can't seem to find a bare B20 block anywhere!?
Is there a reputable place online to get it from?
If cheap enough I guess even a short block would work.

Those are 'long blocks'. meaning they have a block and a head. And they aren't bare.

OP, what are you looking to build?

I'm still not 100% on that

I just bought my 1st project car, not a DD.

I was thinking a B20 block with good internals, some VTEC head and a turbo, in a nutshell at least.

You are a little mouthy, i answered his question.

It should be known, that if building a B20 for boost, it's not the thickness of the walls that is the problem, but how they are mounted to the block, that is different that B18B versions, and not as strong. For boost, unless the OP sleeves the block, he is better off with a B18B strength wise. They can handle a lot of boost in stock form.

Aslo, as far as a price point goes, buying a "bare short block" goes, it would be expensive! All the little things would nickel and dime you to death. Every sensor, bolt, oil pump, oil p/u, windage tray, rotating assembly (a crank is nice to have)....ect

This is true. I bought a bare block to rebuild for boost this summer and now realize my mistake. I'm having difficulty just finding a decent crank for it.

You may have awnsered his question but this isn't the 'I know more' thread. If pointing out a fact makes me mouthy than whatever man.

Would you suggest a short block vs. a bare block then?

Short. Unless you're wanting to put together what would essentially be a brand new engine. I mean once I find a crank I don't think I'll have a problem. I'll have piece of mind knowing everything on and in the engine is brand new.

I do, specifically for the knowledge of building an engine from scratch and I'm in no hurry to get the car on the road.

I was getting at what Deetz said. b20's aren't the best for boost.

Building a engine from scratch is cool I guess if you want to be sure everything is new. And you will have the chance to put different internals in, and get some more power out of her.

I think your going to be surprised by how quick the money adds up.

Your better off waiting to get into the motor for now, and do research!

Which blocks are good for boost and why?

I want to build from scratch just for the experience and knowledge and I'm not too worried about the money, I plan on buying the internals as budget allows, I'm in no hurry.

I already had mentioned it, the B18B is better, because of the way the sleeves are mounted in the block, it is a stronger design, which matters if you are boosting
