hey so i have 1998 honda civic hx and the rpms have been fluctuating as the car speeds up. so i took it to a mechanic and no codes came up on about the computer and he didnt know what to do with it. he said it might be a bad transmission or a bad computer

if i was to clean out the IAC valve would that fix it, plus i dont know where to find the IACV, here are some pictures if you can help me find it

im thinking that its in the first picture with the two bolts but im not really sure

 

Are the rpms ACTUALLY fluctuating or just the gauges? IACV is behind the intake manifold. Also if it's the IACV, the RPM should be fluctuating when at idle, not when in gear. You may also find it difficult to maintain speed as the car will either want to accelerate or decelerate. Get a helms service manual (Factory service manual) for around $30-50.. there are PDF versions floating around online but I have to warn you that it's cheaper to buy the legitimate book than to print it out yourself which is why piracy of books is unheard of. I have the PDF version of the 96-00 service manual but I use it as reference so I can do text search on it. I have a paper copy of the service manual as well.

 

Also have the alternator tested.

 

the rpms fluctuate when it is in drive while it is speeding up and also as it maintains a constant speed. As the rpms fluctuate it feels as though the car is lunging forward. It doesnt really have a lack of power and it speeds up just fine for a 4 cylinder engine.

 

is it automatic or 5 speed.. if its automatic and it misses gears then its the tranny thats bad. oh plus have u tried the idle valve?
