Default anyone using nippon or supertech pistons for light boost ?

hey im rebuilding the b16a , trying to do mostly stock parts to past CA smog easily. I was thinking of using stock cams , and stock compression pistons .. and use the stock ecu and stock CAT to pass smog, and then unbolt everything , install a log manifold with a gt28r, and a s300 to have some fun. this is a budget build for a daily driver and every penny saved counts ! ..

- after researching , ive read that the nippon pistons are great quality and similar to an OEM piston ( but much cheaper ) ! and have stronger ringlands ... and the supertech piston seems to be a much cheaper forged piston .. i plan on using stock rods

my goal is to keep it around 10:1 compression so it would run correctly with the stock ecu , and with the turbo , im not lookin to push pass 300-320whp with the gt28r.

Has anyone used the nippon piston or supertech piston before ? .. please share your experience with them or any other type of feedback. thanks !!

the HP levels your looking for are achieveable on stock internals so supertechs would be that much stronger

Get Nippons and have them machined for the C clip and run aftermarket rods. There is a member on here who made like 480 on them.

oh yeah and one of my buddy was using the same pistons on his 320hp boosted gsr too.
could of pushed it more but he didn't trust the pistons.

if I decide to use the nippons , I plan on using the gsr pistons, not the LS to keep it at 10.1 compression and stock gsr rods . is that still safe for 320 whp for a daily driver ?

Yes you'll be fine. If you're tearing into the motor to rebuild it then might as well do rods at the same time. Then you will be set to make a lot more power. "assuming the rest of the setup will support it"

wow nice ! .. a few questions :

- are the nippons actually stronger than the OEM honda pistons >?

- do the nippon rings require filing or do they come in specs like the OEM honda ?

the nippon pistons are not oem copies... they are stronger... try making 500hp on stock cast pistons... reliably

they have stronger ringlands, are cast differently and feature lower compression ratios.

its basically an upgraded LS piston. Same compression with stonrger, thicker ringlands. in any case not the same as oem.

no the rings don't need grinding or filing.

ALL rings should be gapped.

it doesnt matter the brand. installing rings without checking the gap first is NOT how it should be done.

If your making that kind of power dont cheap out on rods by using oem. for 300 bucks can get eagles and have a strong bottom end. turbocharging isnt cheap especially when you want to start making good power. you cant have a cheap reliable fast car, just doesnt happen
