Default 1990 DX tranny question

Hi guys, so I've read through all the relevant threads about taking apart the transmission housing, I've followed all the advice but just can't seem to get the housing off. Here's a video that shows how much it will open but then it just seems like there's still something holding it in place. http://youtu.be/AK43cdaqAJA

I was going to open it when I replaced the clutch but gave up because of the same reason, but now I know there is a bearing that needs replacing inside the tranny, I just can't for the life of me get it seperated.

Hopefully somebody has some kind of a tip or trick they can pass on.

Can't watch the video from here.. but I am guessing the countershaft snap ring is the "still something holding it in place" bit.. At the "peak" of the transmission, there is a plug that has a 1/2in square relief in it. you need to use a breaker bar to remove the plug, then inside there is a snap ring on a bearing. open the snap ring and you will hear the countershaft drop. then the housing will lift off.

It looks like this once the plug is out..

Hi thanks for your response!

I have been opening the snap ring and nothing has come loose. Even with a second set of hands opening the snap ring and I trying to pull in apart its still stuck. Has anybody encountered a snap ring this difficult??

I'm using snap ring pliers to pry it apart as far I can, any other tools you recommend? How far should the snap ring open?

You will know when the snap ring has been unseated because you will be able to move it around a bunch, and the top of the countershaft will drop to the point where the snap ring almost could not be put on if you wanted to.

I have heard horror stories of them being stuck, but I have cracked open a dozen or so transmissions, and never really had issues. I usually use lock ring pliers rather than snap ring pliers though. might be worth it to pick up a set of those to make life a little easier.

Just want to update, the pliers were the problem, my wife finally opened them up with 2 flat head screwdrivers, the little extra it opened was just enough to pop the case open.
Thanks again for your help.
