Hey guys. im looking to get some new coilovers for my civic. its got some cheap ebay coilovers now from the previous owner and unfortunately they've had about as much as they can take. i was just wondering how hard a new set would be to install and what brand some of you would recommend. thanks.

 

Suspension is very straightforward to install. Very difficult to do wrongly.

Before we recommend a brand it's going to help to know what budget you've got.

I offer you this:

Cheapest: $400-600 Koni Srt. + choice of spring or coilover sleeve combo.
- Lifetime Warranty. nothing wrong with used springs or coil sleeves.

Next Progress CS-II $560
-1 year warranty. Great company. Good customer service. You can pick rates. Been in business for over a decade.

Next is Koni/GC $800
- Most tried and true setup. very versatile. Used by thousands of racers and enthusiasts. Been in business forever. Lifetime warranty. You can pick your rates.

There really aren't many option I'd recommend other than these. At all of these price points it's hard to argue against koni's lifetime warranty or Progresses Customer service and quality.

is it just your daily driver, will you be tracking it, or just spirited driving on the streets?
Also will it be it be slammed?

no. its just my daily driver. im also on an extremely tight budget lol. but basically it rides like ****, and i know for a fact that the front passenger side coils are shot.

 

We need a budget number?

How are the coils shot? Or do you mean the shocks?

 

probably around $200-ish lol. thank you minimum wage.

 

Look for stock shock/springs, and put them in. You wont be getting anything nice for $200.

OR, you could start looking for a nice used lowering spring. However, with the cheep coilovers your shocks are likely blown which cause the ride to be bad reguardless of what springs you have.


What's your min wage? I am pretty ours is higher, but I have always made it or slightly higher so I do know where your coming from.

 

$7.25 an hour. it sucks. im usually good about saving money but going to college and driving all the time plus a carton of cigs a week is killing me lol.

Saving is deffinetly a true test. Give it another month or 2 and see where your at.

jesus christ lol. thats ridiculous man. if cigs got up to that high down here then i'd probably finally quit haha. also, do you know if the front end being out of alignment would cause my car to jerk when im going down the road? i just got a 4 wheel alignment done like 6 months ago. but im sure with it riding so rough it could've knocked something out of line.

Yea, it's $9.xx if you go to safeway. A lot, if not everything is more expensive here, then where you are.

 

if im driving straight the wheel will sort of go back and forth on its own and when i make a slight turn, then go to turn back the wheel jerks to the opposite direction of the turn. its kind of hard to explain.

 

also the steering feels loose and doesnt react as quickly as it did a few days ago.

 

That doesn't sound like an alignment problem to me.

I would wait and hope this thread either gets moved to the suspension forum, and someone a little more knowledgeable posts or both. OR start a new thread in the suspension forum and ask that question.

its cool. i'll probably take it up to this shop thats close to me in a day or 2 and have them look at it. they're the ones who aligned it last time. and if it does turn out to be the suspension i just found some used oem shocks and springs for $200 bucks lol.

 

My question is can I put coilover on my 99 civic hatchback dx. But in lies the question I am putting my 5 lug conversion on from a ctr. Can I order the same coilovers for a civic dx as a ctr?

 

With your situation I would recommend you buy some good condition used oem shocks/springs. I'd sell you mine but I'm pretty sure I want to keep them.

I make only a little more than minimum wage. You just need to be frugal. Hell I've got a house and retirement savings.

A carton of cigarettes a week is ridiculous. Aren't they almost $5 a pack? Isn't that $100 a week?

If you quit you could get reliable aftermarket suspension in a month.

Better to start your own thread instead of thread jacking. It's rude to interrupt someone elses plea for advice by inserting your own.

Suspension applications do not change when you change brakes/axles etc. Your suspension still depends on your chassis.

 

Man a nice ride which you can stay cheap is find some used OEM shocks and find some used good condition springs Tein, H&R ETC... Might spend 200-300 tops if you look around good and the ride is actually pretty smooth...

 

no. cartons down here are around $40. and thats what im thinking too. just find some oem shocks and get some new coilovers. im still trying to solve the mystery of why the steering wheel is pulling itself though lol.

 

Alignment or bad bushings/bent suspension component.

Or your steering rack is effed.

 

im thinking alignment because it did almost the same thing last summer. its all these shitty roads around here knocking everything out of place lol.

 

It might be worth your while to invest in one of those lifetime alignment packages...especially if you have a lowered civic in a really bad environment. I will stick with the suggestions of used OEM suspension as well. Daily driving on coils sucks in a small city when you try to go to places with bad parking lot transitions...so if you have crappy roads I can only imagine it would be worse.

 

I currently have lowering springs on my hatch and they ride nice. I picked them up for 200. appologize for thread jacking I was thinking 2 birds one stone. GL kid
