The car will run much better when he switches to premium. Even the GSR is recommended to use 91+

So true. When I bought my integra , I used 87 octane gas due to its lower pricing. But, after my dad and friend told me that I should use 91+ due to it being better for sports cars, I did so, and well, the change and feel of the car is so much better. Trust me, you will notice the difference.

Only thing your friend might encounter is getting to 88mph faster. Other then that nothing bad will happen by switching over.

Even US "premium" (91 AKI or "(R+M)/2") isn't high enough, considering that the JDM engine was intended for 100 RON octane, which would be 95 octane here in the US.

Basically, your friend been risking pre-ignition by using the wrong fuel. He should go get it tuned for the fuel he intends to use, or run enough octane booster to get to Japan premium octane levels and run the JDM ECU.
